Warning: Contains spoilers for One Piece chapter #1037

In the world of One Piece, Kaido is known as “the strongest creature”. He is one of the Four Emperors who rule over the New World, and the commander of a massive pirate fleet consisting of more than 20,000 people, including many Devil Fruit users. His great strength is further increased by the power of his Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, which allows Kaido to transform into a fearsome dragon. Finally, he can use Haoshoku Haki, an ability that only one in a million possesses. Despite all of that, Kaido was still hiding his most powerful combat technique, which he unleashed on Luffy during their fight at the top of Onigashima.

Kaido and Luffy are clashing for the third time. In their two previous encounters, the Governor-General of the Beasts Pirates easily bested his young challenger: the first time with a single blow, the second tossing him into the sea, which Luffy survived only by mere chance. Without a doubt, Kaido is the strongest opponent that the Straw Hat pirates ever had to face, and with good reason. The first time that this character was introduced to One Piece readers, he was drunkenly trying to kill himself by jumping from Skypeia Island, 10,000 meters above sea level, but after landing he lamented only a minor headache. His already ridiculous strength is augmented by his Devil Fruit, a Mythic Zoan type that gives Kaido all the powers and characteristics of a legendary dragon: his scales are impossible to penetrate even by Busoshoku Haki users, and he can control fire, thunder, and even air to dangerous effects.

Overall, Kaido is a powerhouse, but it seems that, in their third fight, Luffy is finally forcing him to go all out. The Straw Hat captain has mastered “infusion”, a technique that allows him to cover his blows with Haoshoku Haki, with which he is finally able to injure Kaido, overcoming his natural resilience and the toughness of his dragon scales. Moreover, it appears that Luffy is also gaining a new level of control over his Gomu Gomu no Mi abilities, and is now able to combine his Gear Second and Gear Third techniques, switching from one to the other in an instant. While Kaido seems to enjoy the fight because it’s providing him with the first real challenge in a very long time, he also resorts to a new, dangerous set of attacks in One Piece‘s latest chapter, titled Shuron Hakke, Drunken Dragon Bagua.

This is essentially Kaido’s version of the Chinese Drunken Fist Kenpo: by getting really drunk, his movements become more unpredictable, he switches rapidly between his human and beast forms, and even his Haki becomes stronger. The Shuron Hakke also has various modes based on Kaidou’s mood swings while he’s drunk: “Laughing Drunk”, “Depressed Drunk”, “Crying Drunk”, “Angry Drunk”. Each mode is associated with a different technique, and together they gave Luffy a hard time. The Straw Hat captain was finally able to adapt and counter, but not before taking serious damage.

Since his introduction, Kaido was presented as a heavy drinker, but fans never expected that this personality trait would be revealed as one of the Emperor’s most powerful weapons. Both Kaido and Luffy are exhausting their techniques and stamina, so it’s only a matter of time before one of the two stands as the victor on top of Onigashima. One thing is for sure: the outcome of their fight will determine the future of the world of One Piece.
