For twenty-five years, One Piece has remained one of the best-selling and popular Shonen Jump manga series of all time. And the anime adaptation has been one of the most celebrated too, reaching the thousandth episode last year.

Since its debut, there have also been plenty of video games that covered the many arcs surrounding Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they try to find the legendary One Piece treasure. Whether they’re in classic beat ’em ups or open-world adventures, fans have been treated to some of the best (and, unfortunately, worst) of One Piece video games.

8 One Piece: World Seeker

The idea of an open-world game set in the One Piece universe was an ambitious and exciting concept for fans. Especially as it was produced by Ganbarion, who worked on a number of video games based on Shonen Jump properties before.

But despite their attempts at trying to make the best open-world game and featuring an original story, the gameplay was heavily criticized. With slow and clunky traversal movesets, repetitive gameplay, and the same goons to beat up, it sadly impacted an otherwise good-looking game.

7 One Piece: Burning Blood

Released on PC, PS4, and PS Vita consoles, this was also the first One Piece game ever to be released on an X-Box console. It takes place during the infamous Marineford Arc of both the manga and the anime and saw key characters who took place in these episodes and chapters duking it out in stylized arenas and stages.

While the 3D fighting game certainly looked the part with the iconic character designs transitioning well into the cel-shaded models, its gameplay wasn’t as aspiring. Slow movements in giant arenas just didn’t quite recreate the same high-octane action that fans of the fighting video game genre have come to expect.

6 One Piece: Grand Adventure

The sequel to One Piece: Grand Battle!, the 2006 game was released on both the PS2 and GameCube consoles. Choosing from a cast of twenty-four characters, gamers got to play as Chibi-style heroes and villains in a 3D brawler on stages based on some of the islands featured in the early part of the series.

With a range of costumes to choose from for each character, crazy special attacks based on some of the best finishing moves from the One Piece anime, and additional characters, this was certainly an improvement from its predecessor. It was also more critically praised as well and was regarded as an example of a good video game sequel.

5 One Piece: Treasure Cruise

While One Piece has seen its fair share of mobile video games, one of the most well-reviewed was the 2015 title One Piece Treasure Cruise. Available for both Android and IOS devices, the RPG featured over a thousand characters to unlock and use in combat against some of the deadliest pirates within the series.

Despite featuring controversial mechanics from gacha games, Bandai Namco Entertainment’s game was well-received among critics. Furthermore, it had over one hundred million downloads as of 2019.

4 One Piece: Unlimited Adventure

Released exclusively on the Wii in 2008, One Piece Unlimited Adventure would be the start of a series that would be mostly exclusive on the Nintendo systems. As well as new costumes, it featured an original story surrounding events of the manga and anime up to the Water 7 Saga for both fans and newcomers to jump into the action.

The 3D action-adventure game featured a total of 44 characters for play and gamers were treated to a variety of single and multiplayer modes. It also did a good job at using tropes from classic RPG and adventure games within one package and a classic Wii game to be remembered.

3 One Piece: Unlimited World Red

This 3DS adventure game was positively reviewed when it was originally released in 2013. Utilizing the dual screens, players were able to control Luffy around a hub town and take down bad guys while using the touch screen to track the player’s progress.

In 2017, the equally critically praised ports for Steam, the Nintendo Switch, and PS4 consoles were released. With an HD upgrade and multiplayer added, the game was able to reach new audiences once again while fans could return to this simple, but fun, adventure.

2 One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4

Famous for their hack and slash Dynasty Warriors series, Omega Force created the formula that made their titles fun and action-heavy and was eventually used on other major properties from the video game and anime industries. But amongst these titles, Pirate Warriors has remained one of the most beloved and faithful to the iconic Shonen Jump series and recreated some of the best main characters in their engine.

While the third game in the series remains one of the best, Pirate Warriors 4 added new characters as well as additional content based on the Wano arc from the manga and anime. And while some scenes and certain assets were used from the previous installment, it was still able to simultaneously make one of the best One Piece and hack and slash games of all time.

1 One Piece (Game Boy Advance)

The Game Boy Advance was home to some of the best 16-bit handheld games ever produced. And while the first One Piece game didn’t quite reach the high Nintendo standard, it still remains a fun title and one of the best games in the series to date.

The platformer recreated Luffy’s signature moves into the button-bashing combat and reacted comedically to certain obstacles, especially as he waved his arms and panicked on icy platforms. It’s a shame that not many platformers have been made recently on the Straw Hats as this game shows just how well it works within this video game genre.
