Netflix has released the first look images for Outer Banksseason 2 — with The Pogues (especially John B and Sarah) once again having to run for their lives. Created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, the action-mystery series debuted on April 15 2020. Despite little fanfare, the show followed in Stranger Things‘ footsteps to become a surprise, word-of-mouth hit. Its blend of sun-soaked romances, likeable and sympathetic characters, and Goonies-esque adventure proved a bingeworthy treat for many and made it one of the best Netflix shows of 2020. As a result, Netflix renewed Outer Banks for a second season.

Played by Chase Stokes, Outer Banks followed John B as he attempted to find $400 million in hidden gold and solve how it connected to his father’s disappearance. Set in a coastal town in North Carolina, he ultimately roped a group of friends known as Pogues into the quest. They were comprised of Madison Bailey’s Kiara, Jonathan Daviss’s Pope, and Rudy Pankow’s JJ. A trail of murder and mayhem soon followed — as the gang clashed with wealthy elites known as Kooks and forces eager to beat them to the gold by any means necessary. Though eventually successful, the ending of Outer Banks season 1 saw the gold slip through their grasp amid painful betrayals. Surviving a near-death experience, however, John B and starcrossed lover, Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), decided to track the treasure to The Bahamas.

With filming having officially wrapped on Outer Banks season 2, Netflix released a selection of new images via TVLine. As if the group hadn’t done enough running from and actively dodging danger, the pattern looked set to continue in the sophomore outing. Although John B and Sarah could be seen enjoying a brief respite on a beach, they were also glimpsed dramatically fleeing something. Similarly, the popular pairing of JJ and Kiara also looked to be on the run. In customary fashion, JJ seemed to thrive in the chaos while Kiara endured it with a more traditional, terrified reaction. Check out those images and several more below:

The imaged reaffirmed that The Pogues would remain separated — at least for the early episodes. Despite the gold leaving town (with John B and Sarah in pursuit), things looked just as dramatic in the Outer Banks. Kiara, JJ, and Pope appeared to be back at school in addition to likely providing long-distant support and cover for their wayward friend. With Pope no doubt eager to get his previously-sacrificed academic opportunities back on track, that’ll likely prove a tense complication to matters. It also appeared as though his family life would be more deeply explored, with him visiting his aging Me-Maw (Carol Sutton).

As if that was not enough, the villainous Ward Cameron (Charles Esten) and Rafe (Drew Starkey) were glimpsed in a funeral setting. This will most likely be the memorial for Sheriff Peterkin (Adina Porter), whose murder they themselves committed. The brazen level of hypocrisy demonstrated in service of hiding their dark secrets will no doubt only fuel fans’ hate of the pair in upcoming episodes. As such, many will already be hoping for some kind of justice to befall them in Outer Banks season 2.

In terms of those episodes, the following was also offered by the show’s creators: “Season 2 is going to test our crew like never before. We’ve turned up the dial on everything fans loved about Season 1 — more mystery, more romance and higher stakes. It’s a full throttle, action-packed adventure and these photos offer a glimpse into the next chapter for our Pogues. All we can say for now is buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride.” Based on the above photos, that would almost certainly seem to be the case. As such, fans will no doubt be even more eager for Outer Banks and its beloved characters to officially return.

An official release date for Outer Banks season 2 has yet to be announced, but is expected on Netflix sometime in Summer 2021.
