Outer Banks Star Rudy Pankow Discusses What JJ’s Season 3 Arc Could Be

Outer Banks star Rudy Pankow discusses JJ’s potential season 3 story arc, which could include a budding romance. Netflix recently debuted the action-packed second season of Outer Banks, which featured the long-awaited reunion of the Pogues and their battle against the Kooks to find the much-coveted ancient treasure.

Pankow stars alongside Chase Stokes as John B, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara, and Jonathan Daviss as Pope. The end of Outer Banks season 2 left fans with a lot more questions than answers, including the romantic fate of some of the characters. Fans saw Pope and Kiara attempt a relationship throughout the season, which ended with the two deciding they are better off as friends. And considering John B and Sarah have been paired off since the end of season 1, fans were left wondering if a third season could leave room for romance between Kiara and JJ. Looking back on season 1, the three Pogue boys all admitted to having crushes on Kiara. But JJ is the only one who has yet to pursue it.

Pankow recently spoke to Us Weekly about his character and the future of the Outer Banks gang. The actor admitted he’d “love” to film a third season and discussed whether or not a romance would be in his character’s future. In his opinion, season 2 was filled with so much action and so many subplots that it wasn’t possible for romance to be at the forefront. And particularly for JJ, he was only concerned about the current moment and the survival of himself and his friends. However, he admits that if Netflix greenlights season 3, the Pogues need to “start talking” about their end goals in all aspects of life. Pankow said:

“I think there’s a talk with Pope. There’s a talk with Kie, kind of like, ‘What exactly is going on? I’m your friend too.’ I think he might be feeling a little left out, like, ‘What’s going on here?’ I think what’s happening in season 2 is JJ is really focused on the safety of things and also restitution. So yeah, like I think there’s a lot of other factors that are going on with JJ.

“I think there will be a time a place to have that talk but it’s just not yet, because there are so many other things that he’s dealing with.”

Outer Banks has come a long way from its first season when the Pogues had a strict rule of no romances within the group. Clearly, John B and Sarah threw that out the window, leaving room for Kiara and Pope’s attempt at a relationship. But now that the two are back to being friends, it allows an opportunity for JJ and Kiara to explore their potential chemistry with the addition of more one-on-one scenes. Kiara is responsible for saving JJ’s life at one point in season 2. And they share similar fantasies about living a simple, peaceful life after the chaos is over and the gold is in the rightful hands of the Pogues.

But as Pankow suggested, both Outer Banks characters have survival instincts that take over any inklings of romantic feelings they may have. JJ in particular spent the majority of season 2 figuring out if his friends were alive and, if so, how to save them from non-stop doom. Now that the gang is back together with John B as the de facto leader, it leaves room for JJ and Kiara to explore their feelings in a future season of Outer Banks.
