The sleeper hit of 2016 Oxenfree is getting a sequel on the Nintendo Switch titled Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals. Announced at Nintendo’s Indie World showcase, many intrigued Nintendo fans may find themselves wanting to research and figure out if the predecessor is worth playing. It absolutely is, but the research should stop right there – because Oxenfree is best experience with zero outside knowledge of what it is.

Oxenfree is about a group of teens that goes to a party on an island. The main character, Alex, brings her stepbrother Jonas along for the ride, and they get into thrilling situations alongside a whole cast of characters. The game is a thriller and has some supernatural elements.

Oxenfree has choice-based dialogue system, and Alex uses a radio to talk to other characters in the game. World War II plays a factor in the plot, and a mystery or two may or may not be solved. If a supernatural thriller sounds enticing, then pick up Oxenfree and go experience it right now. It’s on every major platform at this point, including mobile. Stop researching what the game’s about; it’ll only ruin the fun.

Why You Should Know Nothing About Oxenfree Before Playing it

The tumultuous events in Oxenfree are best played through without any prior knowledge. Heavily researching the game is akin to heavily researching any of the best mystery books; sure, more is known about the characters and their personal stories, but now part of the mystery’s twists and turns have been revealed, ruining future intrigue that was designed to be revealed at a later date. Having a game’s story spoiled is a common experience in the current world of gaming, where one is constantly bombarded with new information on the latest happenings in the space. Modern titles feel almost entirely figured out upon release, unless the marketing purposefully obfuscates the true story or intentions of a game.

This isn’t the case with Oxenfree. The game’s website purposefully has scant explanations of what Oxenfree actually is. There’s information on who does the soundtrack and who the vocal talents are, but explanations for anything plot-centric is contained to a few words. Even Oxenfree‘s launch trailer leaves out any sort of foreboding moments or reveals until the very end so that gamers have very little clue as to what is happening. Oxenfree is an experience that thrives on the ignorance of the person playing it. Doing anything to lessen the metaphorical fog surrounding the game is doing a great disservice to both the story and the adventure that comes along with it.

Getting to go into Oxenfree fresh-faced and clueless is a treasure that few can claim in 2021. Dodging spoilers for a five-year-old game in the age of instant information is almost unheard of, but the fanbase of Oxenfree has done a very good job of not casually discussing the plot in places where spoilers wouldn’t be expected. With Lost Signals on the way, it’s time to unplug the router, bust out the old Switch or new Switch Lite, and experience an emotional rollercoaster that could lead everywhere, nowhere, or somewhere in-between. After all, there’s no point in spoiling the surprise.
