Star Ben Whishaw confirms that Paddington 3 will be filming by the end of 2022. The films, which are based on the series of beloved children’s books by author Michael Bond, have become one of the most beloved modern family franchises. The story follows a young marmalade-loving bear who moves to London from Darkest Peru and takes up lodgings with the Browns, a typical British family, who discover him at Paddington Station. While his clumsiness causes lots of mayhem, his effervescent personality and ability to bring love and respect to people win over everyone in his path.

Both Paddington films, which came out in 2014 and 2017 respectively, have been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, holding strong at 97% and 99%. The intense love that audiences have had for the adorable antics of Paddington and his family only grew with Paddington 2, which is an unusual fate for any sequel, let alone a sequel to a children’s film. Because of this, it was officially confirmed in February 2021 that Paddington 3 would be going into production.

While Whishaw was speaking with the BBC, the topic naturally turned from his role as Q in the Daniel Craig James Bond films to Paddington. He was asked if Paddington 3 was still a go as planned, as it was originally slated to begin filming in the first half of 2022. Although the timeline looks like it has extended slightly, Whishaw confirmed that the film will be starting production before the end of 2022.

Original director Paul King will not be returning to helm Paddington 3 due to his commitments on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. However, he will remain on as an executive producer, with Paddington 2 co-writers Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont. The latter of the two were both writers on the 2019 animated series The Adventures of Paddington, which starred Ben Whishaw reprising the role. It is currently unknown what cast members other than Whishaw will be returning for the new film, or who will take over directing duties this time around.

Especially during the pandemic era, audiences have been turning more and more to wholesome, uplifting art like the instantly beloved AppleTV+ streaming series Ted Lasso, which follows Jason Sudeikis as a character with boundless positive energy. This is a tone that Paddington 3 will hopefully be able to effortlessly evoke, even with the behind-the-scenes changeup. There has hardly been a more perfect time for this type of project, so if the crew can assemble a film even three-quarters as universally delightful as the first two films, they will strike gold.
