Andy Samberg, the star of Hulu’s Palm Springs movie, says a sequel could put the main characters in a WandaVision situation where all is not as it seems. The movie, which released on the streamer last summer, follows Nyles (Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti), two people who are stuck repeating the day of Sarah’s sister’s wedding, over and over. The project was produced by Samberg and the Lonely Island and uses the familiar time loop narrative as its story foundation.

Unlike most characters in other projects who’ve found themselves in this type of situation, Palm Springs‘ Nyles and Sarah are fully aware that they’re in a Groundhog Day situation. They eventually lean into this experience and find new ways to enjoy their glitched reality, such as testing out their new invincibility or seeing what fun they can create with their intimate knowledge of the day’s progression. There’s also the threat of Roy (J.K. Simmons), another person trapped in the time loop, who holds a rage-filled vendetta against Nyles for trapping him in this reality. By the movie’s end, Sarah devises a way for her and Nyles to break free and finally live out their next day together.

Although audiences got to see Nyles and Sarah return to normal life, the film ended with many questions that could create the building blocks for a sequel. As it turns out, there may be one in the works. In a recent interview with RadioTimes, Samberg reveals that he and the Palm Springs cast are interested in continuing the story and that they just need an “incredible script” to start them off. The follow-up could even “be sort of a WandaVision situation,” the actor reveals. Continue below to see Samberg’s full explanation:

“All we need is an incredible script. I mean, it could go in a lot of different directions because I feel like even the way that the movie ends is slightly open ended, depending on your interpretation. So it could be marital bliss or it could be sort of a WandaVision situation. You’re not sure exactly where they are.”

When Palm Springs hit Hulu, it gave audiences a fresh nuanced take on the time loop trope, which has been explored recently in Blumhouse’s slasher hits Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. That said, there’s only so far one can go with such familiar subject matter and the notion that Samberg, Milioti, and the rest of the Palm Springs crew are thinking of other ways to disrupt familiar genre concepts to bring viewers something new and exciting, is quite intriguing. Honestly, a WandaVision situation may work out quite nicely in this realm. Well, nicely for viewers, and perceivable terrible for Nyles and Sarah.

One thing’s for certain, though: It’s way too early to reveal how Palm Springs 2 could relate to WandaVision. But fans can rest assured knowing that Samberg and the rest of the cast is mulling over the unanswered story questions the first movie left open. Another movie that would provide equally entertaining plot twists and pop culture references sounds delightful. But without a finished script, it will likely be a few years before Nyles and Sarah return to TV. Until then, it may be best to revisit  Palm Springs again, and again, and again in order to get your time loop fix.
