Paper Mario: The Origami King has a number of collectibles tucked away through The Mushroom Kingdom. This guide will aid players in finding all four of the shell stones.

Being a follow-up of Paper Mario: Color Splash, this newest Mario adventure centers on the famous Italian plumber saving Princess Peache’s castle that has been taken, hostage. Mario and Luigi were invited by Princess Peach to attend the ‘Origami Festival’ only to have an ominous character named King Olly show up and ruin the fun. This new antagonist decided to wrap up the castle with streams of color and magically rip it off its foundation. Then all of the characters were transformed into origami versions of themselves while being held captive. With the help of a Shy-Guy Mario, Bowser and Olly’s sister Olivia escape the situation by the skin of their teeth. Mario must venture out into the world and take out the sources of the “color streams” that are tying up the castle which is known as the ‘Legion of Stationary’. It’s up to the players on how to tackle this adventure with this game’s open world and vast regions.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There are five cores to the ‘Legion of Stationary’ that must be relieved throughout the world. While exploring, jumping, flying, and stomping goombas, Mario will face-off with a boss at the end of each region.  They’re all associated with various office supplies such as; rubber bands, tape, colored pencils, a stapler, hole puncher, and scissors. There’s a very unique combat system in Paper Mario: Origami King that’s somewhat reminiscent of a third-dimensional Dr. Mario. With each encounter of an enemy, players will be warped onto a ‘battleground’ that provides a turn-based combat scenario. Players will need to line up the enemies to either jump on them, smash them with a hammer or just simply use a “power-up” to squish them. Throughout the five regions, there is a myriad of collectibles to find that each provides something useful for Mario and company. Of course, it’s up to the players discretion to go off the beaten path and discover what’s out there.

Finding The Four Shell Stones in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Any player that took some time and poke around the ‘Picnic Road’ area will notice a stairway that heads down to the right. At the bottom, there will be a shrine that is sealed up tight by a mechanism with four slots in it. Once players approach this shrine, they will need to battle a Shy-Guy first. Once he is defeated, Mario will be able to speak to a small group of Koopa-Troopas. They will explain that there are four missing shell stones hidden throughout the area needed in order to open the door. Luckily, all of the shell stones can be located throughout the area known as ‘Overlook Mountain’. It will take some climbing and platforming, but the shell stones can be acquired easily enough.

First Shell Stone in Paper Mario: Origami King

  • Players will eventually come across a Monty Mole sitting at a table that’s surrounded by three Koopa-Troopas. Walk up to him and spark up a conversation and players will quickly find out that the Mole is auctioning off the ‘Green Shell Stone’. The starting bid will be 10,000 coins, but if players are smart, they can actually haggle the Mole to reduce the price down to 500 coins, instead. Once a deal is made, the ‘Green Shell Stone’ will simply be given to the player.

Second Shell Stone in Paper Mario: Origami King

  • The next shell stone is a little bit down the road from where the ‘Green Shell Stone’ was obtained. Cross over a bridge and eventually, there will be an upper platform that has some bushes. If players watch closely, there will be some movement in the bushes. Use the hammer and smash the suspicious bush and a Goomba will pop out. Battle the Goomba and defeat it. After this is done, a platform will reveal itself and Mario can line himself up to use the ‘1000-Fold Arms’ to pull down part of the wall that’s clearly marked. Behind the wall, is Dry Bones who was trapped. The reward given to players will be the ‘Yellow Shell Stone’.

Third Shell Stone in Paper Mario: The Origami King

  • After the ‘Yellow Shell Stone’ has been collected, head East. Players will ultimately come across a dock with a Koopa-Troopa hanging around it. He will plea for help regarding a giant fish that has swallowed up his stone. So, players will need to interact with the fishing pole and just follow the controls that will be explained by the Koopa-Troopa. After a few nibbles and a bite, a Cheep Cheep will leap up and players will find themselves doing battle with it. Defeat the Cheep Cheep and the ‘Blue Shell Stone’ will be given to the player.

Fourth Shell Stone in Paper Mario: The Origami King

  • The last shell stone can be found at the very to of the mountain. Once players have reached its peak, head left and they will encounter some giant Shy-Guys kicking around the ‘Red Shell Stone’. Players will need to time everything just right and knock over a couple of the Shy-Guys over while they’re kicking the stone around. Hitting them once will cause them to tumble over for a short time. With the right timing, Mario will intercept the stone and the ‘Red Shell Stone’ will be his for the taking. After all the shell stones have been acquired, simply trek back down the mountain and re-locate the shrine. Then players will see what wonders are behind the giant door on Picnic Road.
