Parks & Recreation had various guest stars, of which some appeared more than once and even played a relevant role in the story. Such is the case of Paul Rudd’s Bobby Newport, heir to the Sweetums fortune – but what happened to him? Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, Parks & Recreation debuted on NBC in 2009, and even though it had a rough start as its first season wasn’t exactly the best, it found its own voice and lived on for six more seasons, coming to an end in 2015.

Parks & Recreation followed the daily lives of perky bureaucrat Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and coworkers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Over the course of seven seasons, viewers not only got to meet those closest to Leslie but also some enemies and rivals, both from Pawnee and Eagleton. Among those was Bobby Newport, who wasn’t really a bad guy as he didn’t know what he was doing most of the time, but he was an obstacle in Leslie’s career, especially when she was running for City Council. Bobby was the son of Nick Newport Sr., founder of Sweetums, Pawnee’s leading sweet treat manufacturer, so he didn’t have to worry about anything, with those around doing all the work for him.

As mentioned above, Bobby wasn’t a bad guy – he just needed proper guidance. He was spoiled, childlike, and not very smart, and expected to be handed the election like any other thing he had had. Bobby’s first appearance was in season 4’s episode “Campaign Ad”, where he entered the race for City Council and was revealed to be way ahead of Leslie in the polls. Bobby was an important part of the City Council storyline, which allowed viewers to get acquainted with him and get to know him better, while also becoming one of Parks & Recreation’s most beloved guest characters.

His final appearance was in season 7’s episode “Two Funerals”, which focused on Mayor Gunderson’s passing and the search for an interim governor, for which Bobby was considered. Bobby was interviewed, but he declined as he was too busy partaking in space tourism. However, this isn’t Bobby’s official final appearance in Parks & Recreation, as he popped up in the series finale, though a special version of it. In the producer’s cut of “One Last Ride”, the future of Bobby is shown, and it’s very on-brand: Bobby finds Shauna Malwae-Tweep crying after being stood up on her wedding day, and they end up getting married just hours after that. Bobby wasn’t the most intelligent citizen in Pawnee, and Shauna was often looking for a sentimental partner, so in a way, it makes sense that they clicked.

Bobby wasn’t left behind during the Parks & Recreation reunion episode, and he made a quick appearance right at the beginning. True to himself, he wasn’t aware of the coronavirus pandemic and had been spending time at his family’s private fox hunting estate in Switzerland. There’s no mention of him being married or having his own family, but it would be safe to assume he and Shauna are still together. Bobby hasn’t changed and he probably never will, but it’s heartwarming to see that the team behind Parks & Recreation didn’t forget about him.
