Parks & Recreation introduced Leslie Knope’s mother, Marlene Griggs-Knope, but her father was rarely mentioned – here’s what happened to him. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, the political satire sitcom Parks & Recreation made its debut on NBC in 2009 and came to an end in 2015 after seven seasons. Although it has a solid fanbase and got very positive reviews, it wasn’t always like that for Leslie and company, as season 1 wasn’t well received. The writers found the right approach and tone for the series near the end of season 1, and the following seasons were better received.

Parks and Recreation followed the daily lives of eternal optimist Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and coworkers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Of course, the series also explored the personal lives of the main characters, offering a look at their families and their backstories, especially that of Leslie. Viewers saw her dating characters like Louis C.K’s Dave Sanderson and Justin Theroux’s Justin Anderson before finding her soulmate in Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) and forming a family with him.

Parks & Recreation also introduced Leslie’s mother, Marlene (Pamela Reed), an important figure in the local politics of Pawnee and who was Leslie’s role model. Marlene made a couple of appearances throughout the series, but Leslie’s father was never included and was rarely mentioned. As it turns out, Robert Knope passed away when Leslie was 10 years old and (for some reason) is not buried in Indiana, but in a cemetery in Florida.

Sadly, nothing more is known about Leslie’s father, which is understandable considering he died when Leslie was very young. Given Marlene’s involvement in politics, it’s possible Leslie’s dad was also in that social bubble, but what really stands out about Robert Knope is that he’s buried in Florida. Perhaps Leslie’s parents weren’t together anymore and Robert moved to Florida, or maybe he was born there and always considered it his home. Marlene didn’t remarry, and in season 2 Leslie (with Justin’s help) set her up with Frank Beckerson, the lifeguard who saved her life in 1968 and with who he had a short affair, but it didn’t work out.

As Leslie was often inspired by all the women in her life on different levels, the absence of her father didn’t really impact her adult years, and a father figure wasn’t really needed in her story at any times (Ron walked her down the aisle at her wedding). With that in mind, it’s very possible that was the reason behind not including Leslie’s father in Parks & Recreation, instead focusing more on Leslie’s relationships with the women in her life, especially her mother.
