April Ludgate is one of the dryest characters and lackadaisical workers at the Pawnee Parks & Recreation Department. She’s unlike any other character on the show, which is why so many fans find her appealing. Her deadpan delivery and looks to the camera are some of the best throughout Parks & Recreation.

The popular opinion for a majority of Parks & Rec. fans is that while April is dry and a little lazy, she’s hilarious and has a big heart underneath her cruel remarks. However, there are some haters on Reddit who have some unpopular opinions on April, her storylines, and her relationship.

April Didn’t Evolve Well

April Ludgate went from an intern who hated her job to the Deputy Director of Animal Control for Pawnee. She climbed up the ladder until she was in a position she liked. And when April wanted more for herself, she moved on from Pawnee and got a job at the American Service Foundation. She quietly grew and chased her happiness.

Despite April’s poor advice to her coworkers over the years, her advice worked for her. However, Reddit user The_Narwhal didn’t think April evolved well at all. “I don’t think April’s character has evolved well,” the Redditor wrote. They continued saying, “As the show has progressed, April has evolved from being apathetic to being extremely zany and weird.” This is unpopular due to how much April has changed from season 1 to season 7.

She’s One Of The Weakest Characters

April may be an eccentric character, but her biggest strength is her confidence in herself. April knows who she is and what she can get away with. However, ThunderYahtzee thinks she’s one of the weakest. “I actually think April is one of the weakest characters on the show.” The Redditor noted that they thought Ann was the weakest on the show but once she left, April took her spot.

As strong as April is, she has had sad things happen to her, which is why her guard is up at times. However, weak is not a popular word to call April.

An Ulikable Character With Poor Dialogue

As rude or offputting as April could be to others, those within Pawnee’s government understood April’s dry sense of humor and weren’t offended by her words. And as April transformed throughout the series, her professionalism grew while her personality stayed the same.

Despite this, Jcwitte had the unpopular opinion that April was “the most unlikable character on the show.” They continued saying, “I roll my eyes whenever she has dialogue. Every line is teeming with sarcasm and she is cruel and mean to everyone for no discernible reason.”

April’s Relationship With Andy Is ‘Toxic’

In season 2, April begins to have a crush on Andy. The two became fast friends and he’s one of the only people in the government building that makes her laugh. Despite his former relationship with her enemy, Ann, April is drawn to him. In the third season, they start dating.

Although April and Andy were one of Parks and Rec.’s best couples, VeterinarianGlobal94 found them “toxic.” As they told Reddit, “I have never understood the obsession with her, or Andy, or their relationship. They’re the worst kind of people and their relationship seems toxic.” Between her “rudeness” and Andy being “incompetent,” they didn’t see the popular couple’s appeal.

To Put It Simply — She Isn’t Funny

Due to Parks and Rec. being a mockumentary, the characters look at the camera crew in various situations quite often. It’s a little nod to the audience, confirming how wild the situation is. April’s looks to the camera are some of the funniest moments because it’s her way of letting the audience in on the joke.

But not everyone finds April funny. MichaelTheDemon wrote, “April isn’t funny, she’s just mean and annoying for no reason.” The example they gave is when Leslie needed April’s help with her speech and April got worse and worse by not giving any constructive feedback.

There’s No Separation Between The Character And The Actress?

When Parks & Recreation’s fame grew, the actress who plays April, Aubrey Plaza, became more popular. It didn’t take long for fans to realize that Aubrey and April are a lot more alike than fans realized. Aubrey was just as socially awkward and deadpan as April was.

The popular opinion is that fans loved how similar the two were; Aubrey was portraying a different version of herself. But some fans didn’t understand the humor. One Redditor wrote, “I really have a hard time separating [Aubrey Plaza] from her characters.” This caused a disconnect for some viewers.

April Has No Redeeming Qualities

As negative and socially awkward as April could be, she did show effort for those she loved and respected. It may not have been in the most traditional sense, but April always supported Leslie and was one of her unnoticed BFFs.

Despite these quiet qualities, EScott13 had other opinions. “She ruins every scene for me, she has zero redeeming qualities, and her whiny voice as she s**ts on a nice person infuriates me,” they wrote. While some agreed with this unpopular opinion, others rallied around April’s personality and good qualities.

She’s One-Dimensional

One-dimensional characters are those without character arcs, growth, or major storylines that transform them. This is what Reddit user MikeZiv thinks of April, despite her growth in the workplace, as a friend, and as a partner.

“She has no interest in anything, doesn’t talk to anyone, doesn’t do anything,” the Redditor wrote. They continued saying, she was “so one dimensional yet they continually push her into the spotlight.” Apil was in the spotlight because she was one of the more honest characters who didn’t give in to mainstream social conventions. April’s quotes were relatable and her growth was inspiring, despite her dry personality. All these qualities make April the opposite of one-dimensional.

Did April Ruin The Show?

At the start, April didn’t have a lot in common with her coworkers at the Parks & Recreation Department because she was one of the youngest workers. As time went on, however, the group became some of her closest friends. She was the complete opposite of her coworkers, on top of being the youngest. April rounded out the ensemble cast.

Awesomeelisa thought differently than the majority on Reddit. “I just don’t like [April] period. This is why I probably didn’t like her in the show,” they wrote. Others were quick to chime in that April made the show funnier for them and that one-off character didn’t ruin the show.

April Got Worse With Andy

If anything, April’s relationship with Andy made her a happier character and more pleasant to be around at work. Although Andy was older than her, the two matured and grew into adults together. _lofrequency wrote, “Andy was an aimless goof, and April was a complacent underachiever. They did nothing to motivate one another to elevate themselves into any kind of definable better versions.”

On the contrary, April was the one who gave up her job so that Andy could succeed with his Johnny Karate bit. Likewise, Andy was nothing but supportive when April wanted to branch out away from Leslie and work for the American Service Foundation. Although they were goofy, they were supportive.
