Warning: This article contains Peacemaker spoilers

Peacemaker‘s episode 6 Butterfly attack sequence has been reimagined in a cool piece of DC comics-style art. First introduced in last year’s The Suicide Squad, John Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker returns in his very own HBO Max series from writer and director James Gunn. The series follows Peacemaker as he is recruited for a top-secret black ops task force to stop an invasion of aliens known as Butterflies. In addition to strong critical reception, Peacemaker also broke records for the streaming service, boasting the biggest single-day performance for any original series on the platform.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Peacemaker aired its season 1 finale last week, giving fans plenty to discuss (including a few surprise cameos), but a specific sequence in Peacemaker episode 6 remains one of the series’ high points. At the end of the episode, a swarm of Butterflies, led by Goff in Detective Sophie Song’s body, overtakes an entire police precinct. The epic sequence, which is set to “Monster” by Reckless Love, features dozens of cops being swiftly overrun, with the alien Butterflies burrowing into their brains to take over their bodies. One casualty of Peacemaker’s Butterfly takeover is Detective Larry Fitzgibbon (Lochlyn Munro), Song’s partner on the Peacemaker case.

Taking to Twitter, Munro shared a cool piece of fan art inspired by Peacemaker episode 6, which sees the police station Butterfly attack become its very own DC comic book cover, dubbed “The Night of the Butterflies.” Munro captioned his post, “Some very cool fan art from @DCpeacemaker episode 6,” including a heart and a praying hands emoji. Unfortunately, however, it’s not clear who the original artist is. Check out the Peacemaker fan art below:

The fan art has a retro feel to it and perfectly captures the more horrifying elements of the Peacemaker sequence, including Munro’s character shocked expression as he encounters the little aliens. The police station attack in Peacemaker episode 6 is played mostly in slow motion. The only audio is that of the song by Reckless Love, which helps to soften the more gruesome elements of a scene involving small alien creatures burrowing into people’s brains. As a still image, the fan art feels like it’s straight out of the 1960s or 70s, capturing the feeling of the B-grade movie horrors of the era and acting as a nod to Peacemaker’s own 1960s origins.

Peacemaker, for many viewers, has surpassed The Suicide Squad as Gunn’s best DC project to date. The show has humanized Cena’s character after his dark turn at the end of The Suicide Squad and provided some of the most memorable DC superhero moments of the last few years. Although the Peacemaker season 1 finale has some of the show’s most unexpected and exciting moments, the episode 6 police precinct attack is certainly a high point, and is clearly one that has resonated with fans. With Peacemaker season 2 now confirmed, the anti-hero’s next outing is sure to offer up even more crazy superhero action to consume, likely inspiring more creative pieces of fan art.
