Peacemaker creator/director James Gunn shares bloopers of John Cena’s profane Star Wars Wookie joke from episode 3 of the hit HBO Max series. Cena reprises his role of Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, after having made his DC Extended Universe debut in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, with fellow co-stars Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee also returning for the series. They’re joined by DCEU newcomers Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Robert Patrick, Annie Chang, Lochlyn Munro and Nhut Le.

Peacemaker picks up five months after the events of The Suicide Squad as the titular antihero has recovered from his injuries sustained on Project Starfish and is subsequently enlisted by Amanda Waller and mercenary Clemson Murn to join Project Butterfly. The black ops squad is tasked with hunting down extra-terrestrial parasitic butterfly-creatures hiding in human bodies around the globe and granting them superhuman abilities. Peacemaker has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for Gunn’s unique sense of humor being on full display in the series, though one joke has proven to be pretty popular since its utterance.

Peacemaker‘s Wookie joke took many audiences by surprise and led to the show not only becoming a major trending topic on social media but also led to a mass influx of Google searches as to whether the Star Wars species do indeed have teeth on their buttholes. While hardcore fans of the Lucasfilm franchise subsequently took to social media to debunk the so-called “canon” trivia stated in the show, it’s nonetheless proven to be a funny notion for audiences to imagine, namely as much of the lore of Star Wars and the Wookies is still unknown to this date. Most viewers have also elected to ignore the detractors of the joke in the belief it falls in line with Peacemaker and his profane thought process.

The Peacemaker bloopers of John Cena’s Star Wars Wookie joke offer some insight into how much fun he and his co-stars had on set of the DCEU series and how much Gunn himself had fun with his own dialogue in the show. With Gunn teasing that he kept more of Cena’s improvised lines than any other past actor he’s worked with and four episodes remaining of season 1, anticipation is high to see what other beloved properties the duo target with their unique brand of humor. The wait for the next episode is nearly over as Peacemaker episode 5 premieres on Thursday on HBO Max.
