James Gunn paired Peacemaker‘s opening credits with a fitting rock song by the Norweigan band Wig Wam. The director’s temporary exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe allowed him to make The Suicide Squad, but the movie proved to be just the beginning of his time in the DC Extended Universe. John Cena’s character was predicted to be a breakout, which propelled Gunn to create a The Suicide Squad spinoff show for HBO Max. The highly-anticipated series premiered on the streaming service on January 13, 2022.

Peacemaker has many of the key components of a James Gunn project. It includes a strong sense of humor that the writer/director is known for, while the profanity and violence match what he delivered in The Suicide Squad. Of course, the other trademark of a Gunn project at this point is a stellar soundtrack. He became known for this as a result of Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Awesome Mix. Gunn continued this with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and later brought his music-heavy style to the DCEU. The Suicide Squad‘s soundtrack was filled with hits, and Peacemaker unsurprisingly features plenty of songs that viewers will be familiar with and unaware of.

Right from the beginning of the series, Peacemaker‘s opening credits tell viewers exactly what to expect. John Cena and the rest of the show’s cast dances throughout the opening to Wig Wam’s song “Do You Wanna Taste It”. The Norweigan and Eurovision-performing glam metal band released the song in 2010 as part of their third album, Non Stop Rock’n Roll. “Do You Wanna Taste It” becoming Peacemaker‘s opening credits song comes after it was previously used in the show’s marketing.

James Gunn using Wig Wam’s “Do You Wanna Taste It” for the Peacemaker opening credits song is an intriguing choice. The song is all about leaving your past behind to find the life you really desire, as made clear through the lyrics: “Pack it up, get ahead. Gotta leave this mess behind. Gotta cruise from the blues. Got a life to find.” This provides some insight into Chris Smith a.k.a. Peacemaker’s mindset for the series. He’s still under the command of Amanda Waller and Task Force X, but the show can be about him wanting to break free of this life and find something else.

There are other parts of “Do You Wanna Taste It” that could inform Peacemaker’s overall arc. The chorus of Wig Wam’s hit song says “Blind to what you’ll soon become. The mirror lies, the whole world’s wrong, but you.” One of Gunn’s goals for Peacemaker could be to fix John Cena’s character by having him confront his actions and personality. He might not fully realize just how much of a villain he’s become and still think of himself as a hero after The Suicide Squad. Gunn certainly chose “Do You Wanna Taste It” as Peacemaker‘s opening credits song for a reason, and the lyrics indicate exactly why it makes for a great pairing.

Peacemaker releases new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
