Coinciding with the release of the HBO Max series, Peacemaker’s first solo story from DC Comics is now available for free on DC Universe Infinite. The digital comics platform has made the miniseries accessible for new fans following John Cena’s portrayal in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the titular Peacemaker.

Originally belonging to a comic book publisher called Charlton Comics, Peacemaker was one of several characters for which DC Comics eventually received the rights. The antihero has evolved throughout his history, while always sporting his red shirt and a silver helmet. Christopher Smith AKA Peacemaker was largely reimagined following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which famously rewrote the DC Universe as fans had known it.

Originally published in 1987 to 1988, the title was written by Paul Kupperberg, featuring pencils by Tod Smith and inks by Pablo Marcos. Throughout the 4-issue miniseries, Peacemaker fought a terrorist organization led by Dr. Tzin-Tzin, a character influenced by Fu Manchu. As the group sides with the Soviet Union, the miniseries was very much of its time, giving Peacemaker a fitting premise based on his patriotism. Flying in a helicopter to fire at the terrorists on the French Riviera, the miniseries characterized Peacemaker in a way that is reminiscent of his live action depiction by John Cena.

The title helped shape modern depictions of Chris Smith, as it took some liberties with the version from Charlton Comics. Since the miniseries released, Peacemaker’s depiction in comics has largely remained consistent. The pacifist-turned-soldier is an action hero who utilizes more weapons than the average hero in the DC Universe, making him unfit for the Justice League, but qualified for Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad.

The miniseries sheds some light on the character’s comic book history, which ultimately inspired the direction of James Gunn’s take on the vigilante. Similarly, Peacemaker’s twisted pacifism plays a part in the ongoing Suicide Squad written by Robbie Thompson, along with the DC Black Label title, Peacemaker: Disturbing the Peace, written by Garth Ennis. Both storylines take inspiration from Gunn’s film, blurring the lines between source material. As the HBO Max series provides backstory for Chris Smith, the Black Label title similarly reveals his traumatic upbringing that turned him into the antihero. As Peacemaker approaches its finale, fans can read more of his adventures for free on DC Universe Infinite.
