Pennyworth Season 2 Teases Batman With Martha Kane Pregnancy

Pennyworth may introduce Bruce Wayne sooner rather than later, teasing Martha Kane’s pregnancy in season 2. The series tells the origin story of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), Batman’s trusted butler and adoptive guardian. Set in 1960s London, the Epix crime drama follows the former SAS soldier as he works alongside Americans Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) to protect his homeland against warring revolutionary groups, the Raven Society and the No Name League. It’s a much more action-packed backstory than any Batman movie fans will be familiar with, owing in part to actor Michael Caine’s own invented backstory for the character.

Season 1 featured a number of big developments for the man who will one day become the Wayne family’s faithful butler. There’s a good chance that in saving the British government from total collapse, Alfred was forced to kill his own father, another layer to the complicated paternal relationships in the Batman mythos. In the process, after saving her from kidnappers, Alfred also has a tryst with the Queen. The Alfred of Pennyworth is clearly capable of much more than brewing a pot of tea.

As part of the DC FanDome panel for the series, Pennyworth teased Bruce Wayne’s appearance sooner rather than later. His parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, only just began their romance in season 1, and so Martha’s pregnancy may come as a surprise to those expecting a slow burn leading to the person who brings Alfred, Thomas, and Martha together in a meaningful way.

Pennyworth season 1 left fans with a lot of questions, and Martha’s pregnancy is just a small piece of the puzzle that will make up season 2. What will become of the Raven Society in the wake of their supposed defeat and what will compel Alfred to continue working with the Americans remains to be seen. Alfred’s next challenge could be anything now that he’s risen up to a personal relationship with a fictionalized Queen Elizabeth II, and he has yet to reckon with the loss of his father, however estranged.

But talk of Martha becoming pregnant in the coming season puts a clock on the rest of the events baked into the Batman myth. Bruce’s parents die when he is just a boy, and it falls to Alfred to raise him into the man who will become the Dark Knight. In a grim twist of fate, his birth begs the question of when his parents will meet their demise. More importantly for this series, Master Wayne’s arrival necessitates a big change for the main character. When will the Alfred of Pennyworth be ready to live the reserved life of a doting butler? Giving up royal trysts and daring adventure may be on the cards sooner than fans had thought.
