Tatiana Maslany’s Sister Alice is not returning for season 2 of Perry Mason. The hero lawyer created by novelist Erle Stanley Gardner became a TV icon when Raymond Burr played him in the classic CBS series Perry Mason, which ran from 1957 to 1966. In 2020, HBO brought Mason back for a much darker and grittier adaptation of Gardner’s work, starring Matthew Rhys as the famed criminal defense attorney.

HBO’s Perry Mason of course did not solely focus on Rhys’ Mason. It also heavily featured Maslany as Sister Alice, a popular old-style evangelist embroiled in a sordid child murder case. Unfortunately, Sister Alice won’t be back when Perry Mason returns for season 2. As reported by TVLine, a rep for Maslany said simply that sister Alice’s “arc came to an end as planned in the Season 1 finale.”

It seems then that the plan was always for Maslany to exit Perry Mason after season 1. This is indeed bad news as Sister Alice was an intriguing character and Maslany gave a compelling performance in the role. However, Maslany does have a full acting plate as she’s set to take on the lead role in the Disney+ TV show version of She-Hulk. Indeed, shooting on She-Hulk would likely have prevented her from returning to Perry Mason even had the show intended to bring back Sister Alice. Of course, there’s always the chance Sister Alice could figure into future seasons of the HBO series, if indeed it lasts that long. Even without Sister Alice, Perry Mason has plenty of other intriguing characters to focus on. In fact, season 1 actors Eric Lange and Justin Kirk were recently promoted to series regulars, so fans can expect to see much more of their characters when season 2 arrives.
