Everything about Persona 5 Royal, from its bombastic style to the breadth and depth of its content, oozes “blockbuster JPRG.” Perhaps nowhere is its production value clearer than in its Japanese voice cast. Fans of anime or Japanese video games are all but certain to have heard Persona 5 Royal‘s Japanese voice actors before, as they’ve appeared in many famous roles over the years.

For instance, Morgana’s voice actor, Ikue Ōtani, has voiced Pikachu since Pokémon began. Persona 5 even references this: One dialogue option during the Kaneshiro investigation is, “Morgana! I Choose You!” Ōtani is also behind another iconic anime character – though one who is much more ubiquitous in Japan than the West – One Piece‘s Tony Tony Chopper. Incidentally, the name of one of Morgana’s Personas, Zorro, is a homonym for that of One Piece character Roronoa Zoro.

While Morgana’s actor may voice the single most well-known non-Persona character, the other Phantom Thieves aren’t unknowns, as seen on IMDb and Behind The Voice Actors. Morgana’s VA isn’t even the only one to voice a well-known Pokémon; since Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, Eevee has been voiced by Aoi Yūki, who voices Persona 5‘s Futaba. Yūki’s resume is full of beloved characters, like Tsuyu Asui/Froppy from My Hero Academia, Madoka Kamane from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and the Tornado of Terror from One Punch Man.

Persona 5’s Voice Actors Have Storied Anime Backgrounds

Jun Fukuyama, the voice of Joker, is perhaps best known as the morally gray anti-hero of Code Geass, Lelouch Lamperouge. Fire Emblem and Super Smash Bros. fans may better recognize Fukuyama as Roy, and he also appeared in Demon Slayer as Yahaba, the hand-eyed Arrow Demon who attacks Tanjiro alongside the Temari Demon.

Another Demon Slayer voice actor – of the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima – appears in Persona 5, portraying the tragically romantically unavailable Yusuke. Tomokazu Sugita also voices Gintoki Sakata from Gintama and Joseph Joestar of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Ryuji’s voice actor, Mamoru Miyano, has played two very different protagonist: Light Yagami, aka Kira, of Death Note and Okabe Rintaro, aka Hououen Kyouma, of Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. Miyano has also voiced several other recognizable characters, such as Ling Yao of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Riku of Kingdom Hearts, and Bedivere of Fate/Grand Order.

The notability of Persona 5 Royal‘s Japanese voice cast is a reflection of the care put into this JRPG masterpiece. The list could keep going, too. Nana Mizuki, the voice of Ann, played Wrath in the original Fullmetal Alchemist and Lan Fan in Brotherhood, but she is best known for playing Hinata Hyūga in Naruto. Haru’s voice actress, Haruka Tomatsu, is Sword Art Online‘s Asuna. Rina Satō, who plays Makoto, recently began playing Sailor Mars. Sōichirō Hoshi, who voices Akechi, plays the title character in the Japanese dubs of Ben 10.
