In a video posted earlier this week, popular YouTuber PewDiePie has recently described how his purchase of a balisong knife on Wish has led to him receiving a visit from the police. PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, is currently followed by 111 million subscribers on YouTube. He is one of the platform’s foremost content creators, having accumulated 4 billion views in 2019, and he currently lives in the UK.

Wish is a popular online shopping service, similar to eBay or Amazon. Accessible through either an app or its website, it has operated since 2010 and was co-founded by Peter Szulczewski and Danny Zhang. Wish allows users to buy products from a wide variety of third-party sellers. These products are generally inexpensive, and the eclectic mix of available products often draws attention and amusement from others.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a video uploaded on March 2nd, PewDiePie explained that his purchase of a Balisong knife from Wish led to a visit from the police. The YouTuber said he bought the balisong, also known as a Butterfly knife, because “they’re fun to play with.” This attitude is one which is evident in PewDiePie’s past YouTube content, where he can occasionally be seen using balisongs as fidget toys. However, the purchase of a Balisong knife is in fact illegal in the UK. As a result, PewDiePie received a visit from the police.

The popular YouTuber blamed the incident on a cultural misunderstanding, saying that in his native country of Sweden the Balisong is considered to be “a tool, not a weapon”. PewDiePie also apologized for his actions, and jokingly exclaimed that he now had a criminal record. Although the exact details are unclear, the video in question does demonstrate that he still retains possession of multiple balisong knives. The incident was also apparently very stressful for PewDiePie, who took it as inspiration to buy a variety of legal stress relievers and present them to his audience.

This isn’t the first time PewDiePie has been in trouble. The creator has faced strong criticism in the past following the usage of racist language. Although it seems unlikely that PewDiePie has endured any serious consequences from his latest actions, it was undoubtedly a tense moment for the YouTuber nonetheless. It is hard to see how he failed to realize the negative connotations of a balisong in the UK, but his long-time familiarity with the weapons may have blinded him to that fact. Given his experience, this is clearly a mistake that PewDiePie would not like to repeat.
