Peacock is set to begin development on The Show Must Go On, an hour-long musical murder mystery anthology series based around a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical phenomenon, The Phantom of The Opera. The original musical was famously adapted into a film starring Emmy Rossum in 2004. Still, the upcoming series marks the first time the beloved production will be used as a central part of a television show.

Deadline reports that the project has been written by the creator of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Austin Winsberg, who will also executive produce in collaboration with Lloyd Webber, Robert Greenblatt, The Tannenbaum Company, and Richard Shepard, who is also directing the pilot. Each season will take place during the days preceding a major live televised event. Season one follows the anarchic commotion taking place behind the production of a highly-anticipated live televised musical, all amid the mystery and fear of a looming murderer at large. It will feature some of the most famous songs from the original musical, including the climactic number “The Music of the Night.”

Fans of The Phantom of The Opera can rest assured that the project is in experienced hands. Winsberg also wrote and produced NBC’s live adaptation of The Sound Of Music, which garnered the highest viewership of a live musical broadcast. The combination of the classically macabre musical with more contemporary drama and intrigue seemingly aims to capitalize on the ever-increasing public interest in comedic ensemble whodunits, such as Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building, as well as the passionate fanbase of the original musical, which holds the title of Broadway’s longest-running production. The exciting new series does not yet have a premiere date but is sure to take some creative risks. Whether they pay off will soon become apparent when The Show Must Go On premiers on Peacock.
