Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for She-Hulk: Attorney At Law episode 4!

Marvel hints that Mordo was right in Doctor Strange‘s post-credits as more sorcerers are entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. The adventures of Jennifer Walters and her legal career took a magical turn in episode 4 when she decided to work with Wong, who tried to sue a former apprentice, Donny Blaze (not Ghost Rider). He becomes the latest example of how there is a rising number of magic users in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including many who are not all that experienced or understand the gravity of power they possess.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

This was exactly what Mordo feared most six years ago in Doctor Strange. The first solo film for Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer saw Mordo leave the Masters of the Mystic Arts due to Strange’s defiance of the natural laws to defeat Dormammu. Doctor Strange‘s post-credits showed him stealing magic powers from those he felt were misusing them. This included his famous line that one of the biggest problems facing the world was “too many sorcerers.” The MCU has now built on that tease, even after bringing Mordo back through the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Phase 4 hints that he may be right.

During She-Hulk episode 4, the carelessness of magic users is directly shown through Donny Blaze’s sorcery. This includes possibly setting up Mephisto through a portal to the Hell dimension. However, She-Hulk‘s real admittance that Mordo is right to worry about the misuse of magic comes from Wong. His trial with Donny Blaze includes the MCU’s new Sorcerer Supreme saying that magic can be so dangerous that a single person could destroy the entire universe. With Donny Blaze and Ned Leeds just a few people who have tampered with powers they do not fully understand in Phase 4, Mordo’s concerns in Doctor Strange‘s post-credits continue to look very well-placed.

Is Doctor Strange Actually An MCU Villain Now?

If Mordo is right that the MCU has too many sorcerers, Marvel might also be secretly admitting that Doctor Strange is a villain. It is hardly a secret at this point that Doctor Strange is a bit more reckless with magic than most. His arrogance has led him to do several spells that he probably should not have done, especially in Mordo’s mind. Whether it was tampering with time to stop Dormammu, sacrificing the Time Stone to save Tony Stark, or using the memory-wiping spell to help Spider-Man, Doctor Strange’s use of magic is certainly not in line with how Mordo thinks sorcerers should act. Now that Marvel is teasing Mordo’s “villain” turn might actually be worthwhile, that changes how Doctor Strange’s “heroics” could be viewed.

To be fair, Marvel has also included several other hints that Doctor Strange has evil tendencies. Marvel’s What If…? showed Strange corrupted by his quest for power, while the version of Doctor Strange from Earth-838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness went beyond his purview. He messed up and killed an entire universe trying to use the Darkhold to defeat Thanos, leading to the Illuminati killing the Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange 2 even included Sinister Strange and teased Earth-616’s sorcerer going down a similar path after getting the third eye from the Darkhold. Depending on what happens going forward, the MCU could further prove Mordo was right about Stephen Strange and undisciplined sorcerers like the ones in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.
