Slender Man is hiding in Phasmophobia’s new Campsite map, bringing the creepy internet meme to the horror game through its new Nightmare update. What began as a “creepypasta” digital scary story became a cultural phenomenon, with Slender Man being represented in books, movies, and now video games. Slender Man – with his signature featureless face and lanky build – has a vast, internet-driven mythology. And after spawning from online message boards, the terrifying fictional character has risen in the ranks among some of the most identifiable horror characters.

Kinetic Games recently released the Nightmare update for Phasmophobia, featuring new content for the co-op horror game. With over a year under its belt, Phasmophobia has garnered a large following. It’s kept that popularity, though, through its consistent updates that bring new levels of fear with maps, ghosts, and features. Phasmophobia’s new Nightmare update, which was released on October 25, brought the Nightmare difficulty – the hardest mode to date – as well as two new ghosts. Another addition was the Maple Lodge Campsite map, which is the first completely outdoor area in the game. Offering limited hiding places and open spaces for ghosts, the map offers several layers of fear. Now, players have discovered another one.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to PCGamesN, Phasmophobia is hiding Slender Man in its new Campsite map. Players have spotted the thin, lanky figure near the edges of the Maple Lodge Campsite, hiding among the trees. Reddit users have pointed out that Slender Man won’t appear in the same place twice and keeps his distance from curious eyes throughout a match. Instead of rushing in and attacking players, Slender Man chooses the passive route, reportedly striking fear rather than damage, unlike the ghosts of Phasmophobia.

Phasmophobia’s new Campsite map has several Easter Eggs strewn about, such as Jason Voorhees’ signature hockey mask and a dead body stuffed under the cabin. The body is theorized to belong to the ghost that is haunting the campsite; but as of now, there is no information as to how the individual died. Other Easter eggs can be spotted with an observant eye, including a Blair Witch Project twig doll hanging on the fence by the campfire and written hearts placed on the toilets in the restroom building. It is theorized that the hearts are a reference to the Saw franchise.

Phasmophobia’s Slender Man Easter Egg is yet another terrifying addition to the game. For many, what makes Phasmophobia scarier than many other horror games is its lack of reliance on action. Players are not tasked with eliminating ghosts but are instead told to identify them to make extraction easier. The passive-like gameplay can make ghost hunting tenser. The same can be said for Slender Man, who chooses to haunt from a distance which, to some, can be scarier than the alternative.
