Phasmophobia: Onryo Ghost Guide (Tips, Strategies, & Weaknesses)

The free Nightmare update for Phasmophobia was extensive, and along with several significant changes, players can now identify four new ghosts, including the Onryo. The Nightmare update introduced new difficulties, as well as changes to the existing ones, a new weather system, a new outdoor map with some Phasmophobia easter eggs, tweaks to existing mechanics, and four new ghosts. All Phasmophobia players can enjoy everything about the new update right away.

Obviously, one of the most exciting changes for players is the four new ghosts available in Phasmophobia. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as special interactions that can trigger before or during its hunts. One of these new ghosts is called the Onryo.

The Onryo is a unique ghost that has special interactions with fire. Not only is the ghost afraid of open flames like those of the in-game candle, but it also becomes more aggressive once the flames are extinguished. These interactions make hunting the Onryo, and the Onryo hunting the player, far more interesting, especially on the new Phasmaphobia campsite map.

Bring Candles and Seek Evidence for the Onryo in Phasmophobia

The first, and most important, tip for dealing with Onryos in Phasmophobia is for players to always bring a few candles and a lighter on missions. These items are relatively cheap, and they offer special utility against the Onryo because its weakness is that it is less likely to hunt near an open flame. Players should be watchful, though, as extinguishing a flame makes the Onryo much more likely to attack and will allow the ghost to hunt even if the player’s sanity is high. Ghosts are able to extinguish flames themselves, so players need to keep an eye on their candles to ensure that they stay lit.

The evidence required to identify an Onryo are:

• Spirit Box
• Ghost Orb
• Freezing Temperatures

As a general tip, ghost hunters should always have the basic evidence-gathering tools available on every hunt to properly identify ghosts. However, if players suspect that they may be dealing with an Onryo, an effective strategy for quickly confirming their suspicions would be to hold a lit candle, then throw it on the ground. Doing this over and over will immediately trigger a hunt, regardless of sanity level, as it continuously lights and extinguishes the flame. Since players don’t actually get money for confirming the evidence with the proper tools, this makes hunting an Onryo much quicker without sacrificing any income.

Additionally, players will want to make sure that they bring a photo camera to take a picture of the ghost and any other interactions. Luckily for players who employ the candle method, if they can survive the hunt they provoked, keeping their sanity high will keep them from being hunted again unless they provoke another phase with more fire. This gives the ghost hunters a pretty safe road to completing whatever other objectives they have for their Phasmophobia mission.
