The indie game Phasmophobiawas one of the breakout hits of 2020, even winning an award at The Game Awards despite being in beta still. The game is still going through a lot of adjustments, including a notable change to Banshees. A new patch has updated the behavior of this Phasmophobia ghost type to make it fall a bit more in line with the other ghosts.

Phasmophobia took off last year after players recognized its potential as a co-op ghost hunting game. Players enter one of many haunted houses, equipped with various pieces of ghost gear, and must identify which kind of ghost is haunting the property. In the process, the ghost will typically grow angrier and try to kill the player, mess with the power, and much more. It is incredibly unnerving and tense despite the game’s lower budget, and Phasmophobia’s popularity has allowed the developer to continue to update it as well as promise DLC.

Phasmophobia‘s Banshee ghost type has been notably scary, as it singles out one player and will not move on until it kills them. That will soon change in a new patch, as the Banshee will change to a different target if a player manages to get outside when being hunted. “Banshees will now hunt like other ghosts and target any player when its target player is outside,” reads patch notes on Phasmophobia‘s Twitter.

A number of bugs have also been fixed in the new update, including a bug where objects would fall through the floor. As for the choice to change Phasmophobia’s Banshee, some fans are a bit saddened by the news, thinking it takes away what makes the ghost special. “I think the Banshee update is a mistake. That made the Banshee unique, the fact that it only had one target,” said @LucyGreenYT on Twitter. “I don’t like the direction of banshee’s update. I would rather have banshees changing their target after 4/5 minutes if the targeted player does not ever [leave] the building even once within this time. It takes away from banshees uniqueness,” said @_Y0RU_ on Twitter.

The new Phasmophobia update is meant to prevent players from essentially cheating the Banshee. Players would often find out who is being targeted by the ghost and then hide outside so they couldn’t be killed. The other players would then be able to do everything they needed to without harm. It’s understandable why the choice was made, but it would probably be much more enjoyable if the Banshee changed targets after a certain period of time as opposed to just acting like any other ghost. Perhaps the developer will make revisions to the update upon fan feedback in the future, if enough people miss the old Banshee mechanics.
