Warning: This post contains spoilers for Eternals.

Comics creator Jim Starlin is thrilled with Patton Oswalt’s casting as Pip the Troll in Eternals, which promises to be the first of several MCU appearances. Ahead of its release, all eyes were on the 10 Marvel newcomers at the center of Eternals, Chloé Zhao’s millennia-spanning cosmic epic. The Eternals are a group of immortal beings sent to Earth to protect humanity from the Deviants. When their mission comes to an end, they go their separate ways, though a renewed threat in the present day reunites them. Eternals features an impressive ensemble cast that includes the likes of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

Like any good Marvel movie, Eternals had a few surprises tucked into its post-credits scenes. While the second hinted at a bigger MCU future for Harington’s Dane Whitman, the first introduced two new characters to the franchise: Starfox, aka Eros (Harry Styles) and Pip the Troll. In the comics, Pip is a frequent ally of Adam Warlock whose continued exposure to the Infinity Stones gave him super-strength and the ability to teleport, hence his presence aboard the Eternals’ ship in the post-credits scene.

Speaking to ComicBook.com following Eternals‘ release, Pip the Troll creator Jim Starlin shared his reaction to Oswalt’s casting and his character’s MCU debut. Starlin revealed he’s been “lobbying for Pip,” for years now, always hinting to Kevin Feige that the hedonistic troll should pop up in the franchise. Now that he’s finally arrived and is voiced by Oswalt, Starlin couldn’t be happier:

“Oh, yeah, I think he’s perfect for it. I got a real kick out of his voicing over M.O.D.O.K. in that cartoon series. I watched the first one and I went, ‘Eh, it’s okay.’ And then I watched the second one, then I got hooked and just laughed my ass throughout the rest of it. Now, Patton’s always been a character actor who I think has got terrific range, and I think his voice is just perfect for it.”

Oswalt has become a fan favorite in the sci-fi/fantasy world over the years, and he’s even had a hand in multiple Marvel projects. Most recently, as Starlin pointed out, he voiced the title character for Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K., though fans will also recall the many times he played double duty on Agents of SHIELD as various Agent Koenigs. Though his appearance in Eternals was brief, he made enough of an impression to make fans – Starlin included – excited about what’s to come.

Though Pip usually aligns himself with Adam Warlock instead of Eros, it looks like wherever Styles’ god of love goes in the MCU, he’ll be joined by Pip. That could be in a yet-to-be-announced Eternals 2, or it could come in some other MCU spin-off project. Either way, fans should expect Pip to stick around in the MCU after his Eternals cameo as a funny, hopefully loyal sidekick. With Oswalt on board to voice him, one has to hope Marvel won’t let this excellent casting go to waste.
