Screen Rant’s very own Pitch Meeting aims its cannons at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the last Johnny Depp-led outing. In Disney’s swashbuckling franchise, the fifth installment saw Depp’s Jack Sparrow return as he’s roped into helping Henry Turner search for Poseidon’s trident to break the curse keeping him aboard the Flying Dutchman. Depp once again led the cast, including Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelairo, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, and Kevin McNally.

Released in 2017, Dead Men Tell No Tales saw the lowest reception from critics and audiences alike and the lowest box office returns since the franchise’s inaugural outing, Curse of the Black Pearl. Due to this poor reception and Depp’s personal controversies, the future of Sparrow and the characters from the first six films are currently unknown. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed a sixth film was still in development in 2020. In addition, Disney is developing a female-led spin-off with Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson penning the script and Margot Robbie starring and producing.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

With four years having passed since the film’s release, Screen Rant’s Ryan George is setting his sights on Dead Men Tell No Tales for the latest episode of his Pitch Meeting series. The sketch sees him star as both a Disney executive and a screenwriter on the film as they discuss the project, which quickly illustrates the various flaws of the film. Check out the new episode below:

Critics and audiences weren’t too kind with their reactions to Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the new Pitch Meeting certainly illustrates what many were complaining about after the film. One of the most significant points of criticism the episode quickly aims at is the film’s decision to illustrate some of Sparrow’s origin in the world, namely how he earned his last name from Salazar stating it to his crew, who are all swiftly killed before any could tell Jack of their captain’s observation for the pirate. This is just one of several plot holes seen throughout the film, including why Salazar himself doesn’t just hunt Jack down rather than sending Henry after him with the warning.

After multiple jokes regarding the film’s various plot conveniences and holes, the Pitch Meeting wraps up with the discussion of the twist that Scodelairo’s Carina is Barbosa’s daughter and her decision to embrace his last name after no earned moments for doing so. Despite the executive’s lack of interest in it, the writer points out everyone being connected in a franchise as large as Pirates is indicative of good storytelling, subsequently pointing out Disney’s flawed belief carrying over into Rey being a descendant of Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With the two new films in the works for the franchise, one can only hope that Disney has learned their lessons from the shipwreck that was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
