As the current Spawn, Al Simmons is currently encountering other time-displaced Hellspawn due to a hole in time that’s mostly his fault. This not only presents an opportunity to revisit some of Spawn’s greatest hits, but also to introduce new players in the eternal battle between Heaven and Hell. Recently, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced that Spawn #313 will be the debut for a new Spawn, one called Plague Spawn.

At this time, Spawn’s world is crawling with old characters that have been repurposed as Spawn’s actions, as always, continue to have unanticipated consequences. Al is tentatively working with his former killer Jessica Priest, who has found a new life as She-Spawn. He faced and defeated Medieval Spawn while Cogliostro confronted the confused but comfortable Gunslinger Spawn in New Mexico, already racking up a serious body count and suspicious of Cog’s real agenda. Recent issues have also seen the return of old adversaries like Overkill and Cy-Gor and former Spawn Jim Downing, whose reunion with Al was anything but pleasant.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In preparation for Spawn #313, Bleeding Cool News have shared a wonderful variant cover by Dark Nights: Metal artist Greg Capullo, both with color and without, as well as a Christmas-themed cover by Bjorn Barends which sees fan-favorite character Vindicator dressed as Santa, carrying a huge bag full of body parts. Capullo’s cover sees him return again to the series on which he was a longtime collaborator, giving readers their first impression of Plague Spawn. With massive black spikes out of his back, green eyes and the classic Spawn chest symbol as seen below, it brings to mind Jim Downing’s early Spawn design or a simple Hellspawn without the cape, chains, and armor.

Whether Plague Spawn is another human condemned by a double-sided deal, a new kind of demon, or a character commentary on the current events of the world, Plague Spawn’s origin could be due to any number of circumstances. In the Spawn universe, it was revealed that demons using human appearances were responsible for setting their version of Coronavirus in motion. Longtime Spawn ally and current antagonist Cogliostro revealed a creature that was part-demon, part-symbiote that attacked Gunslinger Spawn in a failed attempt to test the time-displaced Spawn’s usefulness and potential allegiance. It could be a corrupted version of a Spawn ally or victim or an old enemy, upgraded by Hell and looking for payback.

Whether Plague Spawn is a friend or enemy to Al Simmons is an answer readers will find out in time. With solicitations revealing a new group of characters called the Chain Gang and teasing the return of Omega Spawn, the demonic version of Simmons from the Image United crossover, Spawn could use all the friends he can keep, because the number of enemies he’s facing continues to grow and grow. He’s got 666 problems, and it looks like a Plague Spawn is about to be one of the biggest.
