The creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, has released a new informational teaser of his studio’s next ambitious game called Prologue. Earlier this week, the PUBG creator revealed that he left South Korean publisher and developer Krafton to pursue other projects as an independent developer and to ultimately create his own studio, PlayerUnknown Productions.

Greene began his rise to becoming a prominent developer by way of the Arma modding scene, which eventually led to his own creation PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – a battle royale game that blended last-man-standing gameplay with the exploration and scavenging elements of a survival game. PUBG went on to generate billions in revenue and became highly influential in the game industry as other developers took inspiration from the game mode, leading to titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Having recently (and amicably) left that work behind for new projects, Greene has openly discussed how his new vision is to create open-world games with his new studio and upcoming project, Prologue.

In an announcement posted on Twitter, Greene took thanked his followers and give a little insight into what the PlayerUnkown Productions team has been tackling. Green said the studio wants “to create realistic sandbox worlds on a scale that’s seldom attempted,” and Prologue appears to be the first step towards his vision of massive worlds and an extensive player experience. Originally revealed at The Game Awards in 2019, Prologue was a project started by Greene that marked his departure from battle royale genre games like PUBG.

Prologue will be a title powered by new machine learning technology that will help developers build their envisioned vast world. In the demo, players will be dropped into a sandbox style open-world. There, they must find their way across a run-time-generated wilderness, and use tools and resources to survive in a harsh world without any guidance. This will ultimately utilize what the team had originally planned with their neural-learning network system, which Greene explained will create more rich, interactive, and open worlds for players. Greene also added the game will have a model that allows fans to pay however much they want. He explained, “if you like what you see,” and wish to support the team, then the option is available to do so but not mandatory.

Greene doesn’t seem to be looking back too much at PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which is trying to keep up with other titles that have capitalized off of the battle royale genre in more recent years. Starting a new studio and giving players a small glimpse into the technology further cements this reality. Though more visual aid of Prologue has yet to be shown, more information can be expected in the future – especially with respect to the neural network learning system the team hopes to employ.
