Some insiders believe Sony could finally be working on PS3 emulation for the PlayStation 5, allowing players to enjoy their older games on Sony’s newest system. The company behind the PlayStation has been making some significant moves with the purchase of prominent game developers and the introduction of multiple tiers for the PS Plus live service. With the studios behind outstanding titles like Returnal and Destiny 2 making games exclusively for PlayStation, the company certainly has big plans for the future.

While it is still difficult to attain a PS5 through normal means, availability for the next-gen system should be improving as the year progresses. The official design of the PlayStation VR2 was recently unveiled, which is said to support 4K HDR visuals, and revolutionary VR controls that will pair considerably well with the powerful PS5 hardware. Sony seems to be trying to cover all of the bases for the future of gaming. Especially with the extensive catalog of games players will be able to stream while using the newly announced PlayStation Plus Premium service. Sony’s new tier subscription system teased the ability to stream and download a selection of games from previous PlayStation generations. While that is exciting, PS3 games were missing from the list, disappointing many fans. However, one insider believes Sony is making moves to cure that disappointment.

Fans may be able to enjoy their favorite PlayStation 3 titles on the PS5 with time if new rumors are true. Reported via PlayStation Lifestyle, insider and gaming journalist Jeff Grubb spoke on his GamesBeat Decides podcast. He revealed that some of his sources haven’t shut the possibility of PS3 emulation on PS5 down completely. It has previously been said that the PS3’s architecture makes it extra challenging to emulate its games on different platforms. Still, many developers and modders believe such a task is entirely possible. With fans expressing their displeasure with the lack of PS3 titles available through the new PS Plus digital library or on PSN, the company will likely make the games available if fans request enough.

Now that the PS3 launched more than fifteen years ago, it is safe to say that many of the physical consoles do not work as well as they used to. Once those systems become unavailable, it will be almost impossible to enjoy the extensive collection of PS3 games that many players have grown over the years. Backward compatibility has not been included with every new system released. Since the PS4 and PS5 have never given much support for PS3 games (physical discs or digital downloads), it’s clear why many fans are hoping Sony opens the door to the possibility of PS3 emulation.

While Sony makes moves to appeal to the gamers of tomorrow, the gamers of the past are growing impatient. Many classic games have received remasters for modern consoles, but more than 2500 games were released on the PlayStation 3. After PS3 consoles stop working, many of those games will become unplayable unless Sony figures out a way to let fans enjoy those classics on newer consoles.
