As the Indigo Plateau’s Champion in Pokémon Gold & Silver and their remakes, Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver, Lance is a living legend in the franchise. The ultimate Dragon Master in both Kanto and Johto Lance’s team may be closer to that of a Bird Keeper’s, but his will and understanding of dragons are beyond compare.

Cosplaying is a big part of the fan community, although most Pokémon cosplays focus on the most popular characters, like Red, Blue, May, or Dawn. Seeing a great Lance cosplay is a rarity, but some aficionados successfully capture the Dragon Master’s unique flair and panache, creating a faithful portrayal of the red-headed Champion.

9 It’s Not Lance Without Dragonite

One of the most important aspects of Lance’s personality is his close relationship with his ace Pokémon, Dragonite. One of Kanto’s most powerful Pokémon, Dragonite is the franchise’s first Pseudo-Legendary and a staple of nearly every game in the main series.

Talented Cosplayer @FjAlucard creates a faithful and playful take on Lance, complete with an adorable Dragonite plush that makes the whole thing even better. Taking inspiration from Lance’s costume in HeartGold & SoulSilver, he opts for a crazier take on Lance’s classic red hair.

8 Ready For His Close-Up

Lance is known for his deep knowledge about the lore and power of dragons, who he claims are the single most powerful beings in the Pokémon world. At one point, he even describes them as “indestructible,” although the type’s three weaknesses certainly prove him wrong.

@Kriathan, a cosplayer from Madrid, Spain, opts for a close-up in his portrayal of Lance. Holding a Pokéball and looking into the distance, Kriathan shows a thoughtful Lance, perhaps pondering his battle style or the strategies for his upcoming match against a certain ten-year-old who’s coming to challenge him for the Champion title.

7 Lance In Action

Lance is very much an action man. When he’s not defending his Champion title against abnormally strong ten-year-olds, he’s interested in protecting the Johto region from dangers. This includes subduing rampaging Pokémon, investigating mysterious events, or simply helping Officer Jenny keep order.

Cosplayer Broomie0 adopts this active persona for his take on the Dragon Master. Although the cosplay is now eleven-years-old, it still seems as fresh and faithful as it did back in 2010, when Broomie0 wore it to Manifest 2010.

6 A Champion’s Pose

Like the rest of Pokémon League Champions, Lance seems to be quite vain and conceited. True, as the reigning Champion of the Indigo Plateau, he is technically the strongest trainer in two different regions. Still, he accepts defeat gracefully, indicating that underneath his vanity lies a true champion’s heart.

5 Nailing The Style

Lance is a bit dramatic when thinking about it. He enjoys using his cape as a prop in his Champion poses, swaying along with it when he accepts a new challenge. Like his cousin, Clair, Lance knows that a big part of his role is the flair that comes along with it and he does his utter best to sell it.

Here, Tiirabird Cosplay, a Finnish cosplayer who centers around recycled materials, absolutely nails the stylish panache of Lance’s poses, as evidenced by this photo session she did in costume as the Dragon Master. One look is enough to realize she perfectly understands what Lance is all about.

4 Dratini Included

Before becoming the reigning Champion at the Indigo Plateau, Lance served as the leader of the Elite Four. His team included two Dragonair and one Dragonite. The former two have presumably evolved by the time he becomes Champion, hence why he has three Dragonite in Gold & Silver.

Cosplayer @tiixchan is not only insanely talented, as proven by his Instagram page, but he also creates a softer yet still faithful rendition of the Dragon Master. Aided by an incredible wig and with a cute Dragonair plush, this self-identified Eggplant King clearly understands what being a Champion is all about.

3 Ready For Battle

As a League Champion, Lance is always ready for battle. He and his strong team can take on any challenger and probably come out on top thanks to his knowledge of the type and the close bond he’s formed with his Dragon and Flying allies.

Talented cosplayer EduardLuzhetskiy expertly captures Lance’s battle spirit in his own unique way. Everything, from the battle pose to the waving of the cape is directly taken from Lance’s playbook, and the intense, determined expression on Eduard’s face makes the whole thing even more uncanny.

2 The Essence Of The Dragon

Few cosplayers have the ability to appear exactly as the character they’re portraying. How could they when the character in question is a cartoon, or in Lance’s case, a sprite in a video game? However, cosplayer @Gracyos_ comes extremely close to looking exactly like the Dragon Master himself.

Thanks to a great wig, a very high-quality costume, and a sense of drama that rivals that of Lance, Gracyo perfectly embodies and captures the very essence of Lance. a perfect mix of rugged grace that truly makes it seem as though the sprite came to life.

1 The Champion And His Pokéball

When it comes to being a Pokémon Champion, attitude is everything. It’s not enough to hold the title, one has to believe it and convey it in every possible way. A Pokémon League Champion is not only strong and tough but respected, dignified, and the very personification of Pokémon battling.

Herem, cosplayer Lance_cosplay understands this better than anyone. With a steely look of determination, he looks at the camera, daring and certain, knowing he is every bit the Champion that Lance is. That’s the true meaning of cosplay. It’s not only playing dress-up but understanding and appreciating the character. Lance would certainly be proud.
