The fish Pokémon Lumineon was publicly confirmed to be unpopular according to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s official website. Finding all the Pokémon in the Sinnoh Pokédex is an important mission for players hoping to unlock the National Pokédex, which adds a substantial variety of Pokémon from the first three generations of the games. However, Pokémon like Lumineon are a particular challenge, as they can only be encountered in a few specific battles against trainers in the region.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl have taken a different approach from other remakes in the Pokémon game series, keeping close to the original in gameplay, narrative, and available Pokémon to catch. This includes keeping the 150 species Pokédex roster found in the original Diamond & Pearl games. Because Pokémon only need to be seen to count towards completion, players will want to take advantage of trainer and gym battles to speed up entries for Pokémon that are difficult to encounter.

One of the more difficult entries to fill is for the Water-type Pokémon Lumineon. Evolving from Finneon, the blue fish is Generation Four’s addition to Pokémon like Magikarp, Goldeen, and Feebas. However, unlike these other options, Lumineon isn’t a powerful asset to a player team, and the official Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl website has even acknowledged the Pokémon’s lacking popularity. The information given for finding Lumineon reads, “To meet a Trainer whose team sports Lumineon, you’ll need to surf north from the small beach at Sunyshore City. Don’t try to avoid the Trainer swimming back and forth at the very start of Route 223, because this swimmer is apparently Lumineon’s one and only fan in the Sinnoh region.” This comical explanation has been a topic for BDSP fans on Reddit, with players applauding the “roasting” of the Pokémon.

Unfortunately, Lumineon isn’t the only Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl that can be easily missed when working through the region. The Ghost/Flying-type Pokémon Drifloon, which can initially be seen via a trainer battle in the Hearthome gym, only appears in the wild on Fridays outside Valley Windworks. The info provided by the official website calls battle skipping trainers out in this explanation as well, stating, “If your mathematical prowess allowed you to zip through the Hearthome City Gym without battling the Trainers there, then you may have missed an easy way to see Drifloon.” Due to the overwhelming number of trainer battles in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it is tempting to skip a few encounters, but with these difficult Pokédex entries at stake, it might be better to hit as many battles as possible both on routes and in gyms.

While Pokémon like Drifloon and Lumineon may not be the strongest assets to player teams, finding them to unlock the National Pokédex is well worth the trouble. Doing so adds powerful Pokémon like regional starters, as well as powerful options like Mightyena and Aggron. These types from previous generations add new reasons to explore the Sinnoh region in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and offer players more strategy options for post-game adventures.
