A popular competitive Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl streamer has posted a video urging more options for the online battle timer. The battle timer in Pokémon games has been an ongoing issue ever since Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced a twenty-minute timer. While Sword and Shield made competitive-ready Pokémon much more accessible through the use of nature-changing mints and experience candies, the introduction of such a short timer made certain battle styles, like the classic 6v6 singles format, nearly impossible.

Unfortunately, this same timer issue has been brought into Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as well. The original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games were the first in the series that allowed players to battle online over WiFi, so many players find it especially frustrating for that ability to be so limited in these remakes. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl also do not include many features introduced in PokémonPlatinum, a sequel thought to have improved on the original Diamond and Pearl games, making the lack of a suitable battle timer just another issue out of many.

A streamer who focuses mainly on competitive Pokémon, pokeaimMD, posted a video to YouTube this morning explaining the issue and urging Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s developer, ILCA, to make a change. PokeaimMD explains that this change would allow players to continue to enjoy these games long after beating the Pokémon champion through engaging in online communities, building competitive Pokémon teams, and battling with other players. PokeaimMD urged anyone who agrees to use the hashtag “#ILCAPlease” to get the developer’s attention and hopefully encourage them to implement a change in the near future.

This is also not the first time that pokeaimMD has made a video of this nature. The same streamer made one discussing Pokémon Sword & Shield’s timer as well. But despite that effort, no changes were made in Sword and Shield, and as of the time of this writing, no changes have been made in the newer game either. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are unique in that they are the first Pokémon remakes not developed by Gamefreak itself. It’s possible that with another developer behind the helm, the creators of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be more receptive to feedback like this, and make the much-requested change sometime down the line.

Strange glitches and unimproved mechanics already hurt Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but a simple change to battle timer options could make the games a lot more welcoming. The strategy and thoughtfulness that goes into competitive Pokémon battles can be a big part of what keeps an audience invested in the franchise, and with the highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Arceus just around the corner, this doesn’t seem like a good time to be alienating fans. It will take a lot for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl to live up to the games they are based on, but hopefully ILCA hears the call to bring it just one step closer.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are available now on the Nintendo Switch.
