Pokémon Fan Poll Reveals Which Region Has The Worst Starters

Choosing the right starter Pokémon is often a difficult choice and every Pokémon fan has their favorite. Now, Pokémon fans have taken to Reddit in order to debate which Pokémon games have the worst starters that a player can pick from.

Ever since the very first Pokémon games, Pokémon Red and Blue, trainers have been given the option between three Pokémon to choose as their loyal companion that will join them on their adventure. While the original trio of Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur are the most iconic starters, every Pokémon fan undoubtedly has their favorite grouping to choose from, likely from the first game they played. Which trio is the best, strongest, and most well-rounded is hotly debated, but as a group of players on Reddit found, the debate over which region has the worst starters is just as spirited.

On the Pokémon subreddit, one player who goes by the username negroleo03 posited the question to the greater Pokémon community: which region has the worst starting Pokémon? In the poll, negroleo03 puts Unova, Kalos, Alola, and Galar as the four regions that are up for the “honor” of the region with the worst starters. Negroleo03 stipulates in the post that they think that Galar will win due to recency bias, as it was featured in the latest games of the series, Pokémon Sword and Shield. Currently, Galar is the leader, ahead of Pokémon Black and White‘s Unova region. The three Pokémon that players could choose from in Pokémon Sword and Shield were Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.

The fact that the four regions that are up for the region with worst starters are from the four most recent games could be due to nostalgia. However, it might also be a reflection on the quality of the recent Pokémon games. The next installment, the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus, is greatly anticipated for introducing a brand new spin on the Pokémon formula. Instead of battling to defeat gyms and conquer the Pokémon League, players will journey through the ancient world of Pokémon, tasked with completing the first-ever Pokédex. Players will journey through a brand new region, the ancient Hisuian region, encountering brand new versions of the Pokémon that players are familiar with.

Even though the newest Pokémon games aren’t well-known for their starters, they should be commended for expanding the scope of the games and adding new mechanics. For instance, Pokémon Legends: Arceus was anticipated for being the first open-world Pokémon game, but those rumors were later debunked. Hopefully, Pokémon Legends: Arceus will have better starters than those players can find in the Galar region.
