Fans are expressing frustration with Pokémon GO‘s Limited Research Mega Steelix Candy reward kicking off the new year. The mobile Pokémon game has come under fire recently for issues with pay-to-play content and lackluster events, but Limited Research and Breakthrough rewards have drawn particular scrutiny. With Pokémon encounters that seem basically worthless, like November 2021’s Vullaby, participating in the weekly tasks doesn’t seem to be worth the effort.

Pokémon GO is riddled with problems not seen in the console games of the series. The mobile app greatly limits player inventories, gear, and Poké Balls, with many important items like Lucky Eggs and Incubators almost impossible to obtain without spending real money. With most items being a one-time use, Pokémon GO seems more intent on cashing out on a favorite series than offering players the way to connect originally used to market the app at its release. These issues, mixed with a punishingly difficult Pokémon GO leveling system, can make even basic gameplay a grind for most players.

Pokémon GO player known as Sirtimbob on Reddit created a post pointing out the frustrating reward choice, stating “Alright, I am so lost. WHY are they handing out the 200 Steelix mega energy, which defeated the purpose of doing 4 mega raids last month?“. Other fans chimed in on the post, sharing their personal frustrations with Pokémon GO’s lackluster Breakthrough Pokémon and rewards. Many feel that the weekly rewards aren’t worth participating in and that bringing back Legendary encounters or well-loved species would help boost the incentive for engaging.

Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO also presents many problems for regular usability. Like in the main series games, this additional evolutionary form is temporary, with a Mega Evolved Pokémon staying in the more powerful form for eight hours. However, in order to use the ability, players must first catch a Mega-capable Pokémon from a Mega Raid battle and then amass the needed Mega Energy for that Pokémon. Mega Energy can be obtained through Research rewards or battling against Mega Evolved Pokémon in Mega Raids. However, Mega Raids only offer one or two options at any given point, creating big gaps of time for when the needed energy can be obtained. This causes hard-earned Mega-capable Pokémon to sit in boxes for months, or for the ability to simply be ignored due to its impracticality in standard play.

To help improve these issues, Pokémon GO could consider removing the Mega Energy requirement, allowing players instead to evolve a certain number of Mega Pokémon each week. This would make the Pokémon more fun to use in the game, as well as remove Mega Candy from research rewards, opening opportunities for better challenge incentives. Offering more Mega Raid variety at any given time would also improve options in Pokémon GO, allowing players better access to the special bonuses and benefits of Mega-capable Pokémon species.
