Pokémon Legends: Arceus is changing the method by which trainers store their Pokémon. In past games, all accumulated Pokémon beyond a trainer’s initial six would be stored in boxes on the PC. Pokémon Legends: Arceus offers a new solution that feels like a comparatively more humane storage option.

The region where Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place, the Hisui Region, is home to a number of different varieties of Pokémon to study. Some of these Pokémon, referred to as Noble Pokémon, are highly respected by the people of Hisui for the aid they provide humans. Given this respect, it makes sense that collected Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus are kept in a more courteous and humane way than being abandoned in a PC box.

Rather than a series of boxes in a PC, non-active Pokémon in Legends: Arceus are instead contained in pastures. Because most of the Hisui Region is an unsettled frontier, wild Pokémon roam the landscape freely. To simulate this, players are able to house their Pokémon in a series of fenced-in pastures. In a video released on The Official Pokémon Channel on YouTube, the trainer can be seen standing in front of one of these pastures, as well as utilizing one to store Pokémon. Functionally, pastures seem to work in the same way boxes do, letting players inspect and organize their Pokémon. Even if the change is simply cosmetic, the in-game implications seem much more positive compared to boxes. Rather than catching a free-roaming Pokémon only to permanently confine it in the PC, pastures provide a more humane way for a research organization like the Galaxy Team to care for non-active Pokémon.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Pastures Fit The Game’s Time Period Better Than PC Boxes

Additionally, pastures are a more believable way to store Pokémon than boxes given the era in which Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place. The Hisui Region predates the establishment of the Sinnoh Region by many years, and old models of Poké Balls suggest it existed before major advancements in technology. Having a PC and box storage system in such an antiquated time period could potentially feel anachronistic and unbelievable. Pastures seem much more likely to be a place for Pokémon storage by comparison.

While pastures might not replace PC boxes in mainline Pokémon games, their inclusion in Pokémon Legends: Arceus could have its own novelty. Watching all of the accumulated Pokémon roving around outdoors may be more satisfying than seeing them all sitting in a box, especially if the game’s goal is Pokémon research.
