People who own copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for the Nintendo 3DS are reporting that their cartridges are no longer working. The issue seems to be restricted to certain physical cartridges, and doesn’t affect the digital version of the game.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were remakes for the 3DS generation of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire on the Game Boy Advance. They added some elements from Pokémon Emerald, as well as mechanics that were created after the third generation of games, like new Mega Evolutions for Pokémon from the Hoenn region. These games were followed by the seventh generation of Pokémon titles (Sun and Moon, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon) before the Pokémon franchise made the jump to the Nintendo Switch. It’s possible to trade Pokémon from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to the later games, with the aid of Pokémon Home.

It appears that there are issues with some of the physical copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. According to users on ResetEra and Reddit, their copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire no longer work. In some cases, the game just fails to boot up, while some people can get the game running, only to have it crash a short way into the story.

It’s speculated that this issue is just the result of a bad batch of cartridges, leading to a small number of malfunctions. It’s also possible that this issue is more widespread than anyone realizes, as most people have migrated over to Pokémon Sword and Shield, so they don’t realize that their Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire cartridges no longer work. The people who do own the game might want to check on their cartridges, just in case.

It’s unclear whether Nintendo or The Pokémon Company will offer a solution to this issue, especially as it seems to affect only a small number of people. If the issue becomes widespread enough, then fans might be able to request a replacement cartridge or receive a code for a free digital copy of the game. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were released in 2014, so that could be used as an excuse for Nintendo to not look into the matter. Nintendo fans have a hard enough time getting Joy-Cons that work, so malfunctioning copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire might just become the norm for some players.
