One outstanding fan project is recreating classic Pokemon Red & Blue games into a 3D environment that hits old-school fans right in the nostalgia button. The Pokemon series recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it is not easy to understate what the franchise has achieved in that time. As of this writing, there have been over one hundred different Pokemon video games, 901 kinds of Pokemon species, dozens of movies and shows to watch, and with the latest generation games, Pokemon Sword & Shield selling over 20 million copies.

Over the years, Pokemon fans have spent countless hours attempting to catch them all across many different platforms. Whether it be the free mobile game Pokemon GO that took the world by storm, collecting Pokemon Trading Cards that have skyrocketed in value over the years, or sinking hundreds of hours into the latest remakes of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, fans can’t get enough of the Pocket Monsters. While many people have been devouring content from the franchise, one fan decided to update the original games with a more modern perspective.

The incredibly talented 3D artist and Youtuber CodyCantEatThis recently started their own fan project that has grown into a 3D recreation of Pokemon Red & Blue‘s Kanto region (via GameRant), CodyCantEatThis has spent the last year recreating popular 2D games with a 3D perspective. After completing a 3D version of popular Sonic, Mario, and Legend of Zelda games, they decided to start work on their currently unfinished 3D remake of Pokemon Red & Blue.

The recent release of the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl remakes gives players a more modern look than the original DS releases; however, it is not a complete 3D recreation that fans were hoping for. The project includes each village found throughout the Kanto region, gym leaders, items, and even the ability to encounter and catch wild Pokemon. This fan project is unfinished, and the artist is aware that releasing a 3D Pokemon remake would attract Nintendo’s lawyers. CodyCantEatThis’s impressive work in creating 3D worlds has caused their subscriber count to climb. Fans are eager to see the project continue, hoping this work leads to more lucrative endeavors for the talented 3D artist.

Impressive fan projects have graced gamers over the years, but Nintendo has been reluctant to allow fans to remake its properties. CodyCantEatThis has recreated many fans favorite games using the Unity game engine, and their work with creating 3D worlds can be viewed on their Youtube channel. For now, however, fan creations such as this reimagined Pokemon Red & Blue will remain unplayable for the world at large.
