It’s true: a pet fish-turned-YouTube streamer has gone on to beat Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, having finally beating Champion Steven thousands of hours in. This unique format of streaming was started with Twitch Plays Pokémon years ago, but with a fish now having beaten Pokémon, it’s possible that that the format has reached its peak.

Previously, this fish became viral for discovering a glitch in Pokémon Sapphire in the middle of its journey, nearly 18 years after the game’s initial release. YouTuber Mutekimaru has been streaming the adventure of its pet fish Lala playing through Pokémon Sapphire ever since June of this year. The button commands are assigned to wherever Lala swims in the tank. It’s been a long and arduous road to get to this point, with many hours spent just trying to walk through doors.

Now, over 3000 hours later on Mutekimaru’s YouTube channel, the fish has done it. On November 6th, the pet fish had officially conquered the champion Steven. Lala only had Walrein as their last Pokémon, and through the battle, it had run out of PP for nearly every move such as Blizzard. But when all hope seemed lost, Walrein then used Ice Ball, a move akin to Rollout in that it grows stronger with every successful use. Walrein continuously used Ice Ball to steamroll through the rest of Steven’s Pokémon, and that was all she wrote.

This unconventional format of beating Pokémon was done as far back as Twitch Plays Pokémon, but after Twitch managed to beat PokémonRed & Blue, it never quite reached the same peak as it did back then, even after Twitch Plays Pokémon continued to stream through various games. The debut period of Twitch Plays Pokémon was full of countless sagas that are still remembered today due to many fans coming together and experiencing it first hand. It was unlike anything for its time, but since then the concept has been repeated time and time again.

However, a fish beating Pokémon Sapphire is on a level of its own. It already acclaimed fame when it discovered a brand new glitch in the 18 year old game, but having beaten Pokémon Sapphire is something worth congratulating, especially since it took over 3000 hours of wasting time to get to this point. It’s frankly a miracle that this was able to be achieved, and after a fish has now been able to conquer Pokémon Sapphire, the real question now is how could this feat be topped?
