The upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass are slowly approaching. This marks the first time in the series history where a mainline title will receive DLC. The DLC has been broken up into two sections. The first is the Isle of Armor, where players can expect it this June, while the second half, the Crown Tundra, is expected to release this upcoming Fall. Within this DLC, new Pokemon including Galarian Slowbro will be introduced. Along with new Pokemon comes new Gigantamax forms of older Pokemon. Here’s how players can expect to capture a Gigantamax Blastoise and Venusaur.

Charizard was the only Pokemon from the original Kanto starter trio to make a return in the base Pokemon Sword & Shield. Players would argue online, as this is the first mainline Pokemon title to not feature every possible Pokemon. While not every Pokemon was available in the region for capture, players would still be able to bring over older Pokemon for storage or for battling. In Pokemon Sword & Shield, the Pokemon outside of the 400 in the game is not available in the game’s data. The upcoming DLC is releasing older Pokemon for absolutely free. Here’s how players can get a Gigantamax Venusaur and Blastoise.

Gigantamax Venusaur and Blastoise in Pokemon Sword & Shield

These Pokemon will be available in the first part of the expansion pass, the Isle of Armor. While it is not 100% clear how players can capture these creatures, it is likely possible due to the battle dens in the new wild areas. In the original wild area, players were able to potentially run into Gigantamax Pokemon to battle and capture. Although, since these are starter Pokemon, it is likely there will be some narrative or side quest players will need to complete to get a Squirtle or Bulbasaur will the ability to Gigantamax. The information will be clear this June when the Isle of Armor DLC releases.

Pokemon is the single biggest franchise in the world. It’s surprising it took them this long to release DLC for their games. Previously, they would rerelease titles under a new name with small new inclusions. (ex: Pokemon Pearl to Pokemon Platinum). This is the first time the series will take the plunge with major DLC. It’s a welcomed addition that not only saves its consumers money but allows players to return back to the Galar region and see their Pokemon friends for another adventure. The DLC will set a new standard for how players will consume Pokemon games in the future.

Pokemon Sword & Shield are available now on the Nintendo Switch.
