The Pokémon Company has announced that the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live limited playable beta will soon launch on desktop and mobile devices, but only in certain territories. Pokémon TCG Live is a digital card game that will replace the existing Pokémon TCG Online as the main digital platform for the Pokémon TCG.

Pokémon TCG Live is an upcoming free-to-play game that will be playable on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices. It bears mentioning that the Nintendo Switch is not one of the platforms that will host Pokémon TCG Live. The game will offer a recreation of the Pokémon TCG, with players able to collect cards and battle other players. The Pokémon Company distributes codes in packs of the real Pokémon TCG, which can be used to claim packs in Pokémon TCG Live. This started with the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield – Fusion Strike and is expected to continue with future sets.

The upcoming Pokémon TCG Live was delayed to 2022, but the time of its release is fast approaching. The Pokémon Company has revealed that the Pokémon TCG Live limited beta will launch in Canada on February 22, 2022. It will only be available in this region and there’s no word regarding any other future availability at this time. The beta will be available on mobile devices and desktop PCs. As confirmed in a press release, some of the participants will have the opportunity to use cards from the upcoming Sword & Shield—Brilliant Stars in Pokémon TCG Live prior to the expansion’s global release.

There’s currently no word on a global release date for Pokémon TCG Live, but as it’s receiving a limited beta, then it’s likely set to be one of the Pokémon games arriving in 2022. It’s possible that Pokémon Day will include a release announcement, as The Pokémon Company generally holds a Nintendo Direct-style event to celebrate the occasion. The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Pokémon TCG Live will have cross-platform play during the beta and that players will still have access to Pokémon TCG Online while participating. Pokémon TCG Live will have no in-app purchases and it will receive more free content updates after launch.

It’s not surprising that The Pokémon Company wants to update the digital platform for the Pokémon TCG, as the other major card games have made a similar shift and received a positive response. The renewed interest in the real Pokémon TCG means that there is a built-in audience for a new version of the game that’s easier to play on phones, which is what Pokémon TCG Live should excel at. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel was big on Steam when it launched and has seen a similar response on other platforms, and Pokémon TCG Live has the potential to be even bigger.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game Live beta will launch in Canada on February 22, 2022.
