The teaser trailer for Chapter 2 of the hit horror game Poppy Playtime paints Mommy Long Legs as the antagonist, but she might not be the real villain. There’s no telling for now, but there’s a possibility that a greater evil will beleaguer players at the Playtime Co. toy factory once Chapter 2 comes out. The shady company has made plenty of monsters, after all, so Huggy Wuggy and Mommy Long Legs are likely only the beginning of the horrors that players will see as the series unfolds.

In Poppy Playtime, players take on the role of an ex-employee of the successful – yet abandoned – Playtime Co. toy factory. They were called there by a mysterious letter, presumably sent by the game’s titular toy, Poppy. What happened to Playtime Co.’s employees in Poppy Playtime is unknown, but the letter says that they never left. In their bid to rescue “TheFlower“, aka Poppy, they utilize the GrabPack and try to avoid the deadly Huggy Wuggy, which will stop at nothing to use its powerful arms to literally squeeze them until they pop. At the end of Chapter 1, Huggy Wuggy presumably met his end, and Chapter 2’s trailer showed what would appear to be his replacement, dubbed “Mommy Long Legs.”

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Although Mommy Long Legs looks like she’ll be the main antagonist of Chapter 2, it’s quite possible that she’s not. Nothing is certain until it actually releases, after all, and horror games are known for twists and turns. If there is another villain, there are a number of candidates, from the teased Kissy Missy and Bron to the mysterious Experiment 1006. Everything about Mommy Long Legs and Poppy Playtime‘s other monsters is still largely unknown, so the Playtime Co. factory could be hiding anything within its halls. Until the game comes out, it could be anyone – or anything.

Poppy Playtime – Is Mommy Long Legs The Villain Of Chapter 2?

Mommy Long Legs is a large pink doll with flexible, extendable limbs that allow her to crawl along walls with ease like a spider, hence the name. In the trailer, posted on the official MOB Games YouTube channel, she retrieves Huggy Wuggy from where he fell after the events of Chapter 1, but where she took him is unknown. She also crawls through a hallway to meet the player character, who she greets as “a new playmate.” She certainly seems friendly, but since Poppy Playtime is a horror game, she’s likely to be anything but. She seems to be based on the classic ’90s toy Betty Spaghetty, due to her similar hair and arms. Other classic toys have inspired Poppy Playtime‘s monsters, so this seems like it holds water. Her role in the game’s lore is still unknown, and for now, she’s shrouded in mystery.

Mommy Long Legs was the focus of Chapter 2’s trailer. Her arm stretches across the factory floor to carry Huggy Wuggy, and although it’s tough to see, the player uses the GrabPack to fend off an enemy popping out of the walls, which is presumably her. Despite being in the spotlight so far, however, she might not be the focus of the actual game. The horror genre is known for misdirection, so she could be a red herring meant to distract from the real threat. The second chapter is reportedly at least twice as long as the first, so it’s also possible that she’ll act as a secondary antagonist before the real villain of the hour appears. Players don’t need to know all of Poppy Playtime‘s lore before playing, but some details may provide hints to another monster if it’s not announced before release.

Who Could Be The Real Villain Of Poppy Playtime Chapter 2

Of course, if Mommy Long Legs is not the main villain of Chapter 2, then that raises the question of who it is. If it’s a secondary antagonist, then it seems like it would be another new one, since the idea of a new villain being an opening act for one that’s already been revealed feels odd. However, it could be the “mother” that Poppy talks about in her narrative in the trailer. Although this is widely believed to be Mommy Long Legs, it’s not confirmed, and indeed may be unlikely. Her name is never mentioned, and Poppy states that “Mommy doesn’t like guests,” yet Mommy Long Legs seems excited about having “new playmate.” The contrast is striking, and may point to a separate “Mommy.”

If Huggy Wuggy isn’t Poppy Playtime‘s Experiment 1006, despite the game implying that he is, then its true form could be the main antagonist of Chapter 2. There was also a purple caterpillar-like enemy shown in the trailer, and although it doesn’t quite seem like a main villain due to its fleeting screen time and its general design, it could still be a minor enemy. Kissy Missy has also been shown in posters throughout Chapter 1. She’s quite similar to Huggy Wuggy, so it’s hard to say whether or not she’s likely to be a main villain so soon after her counterpart. Bron has also appeared in Chapter 1, but hasn’t had much of a big role, so he could be more prominent. The other monsters, such as Candy Cat and Boogie Bot, are also viable candidates.

Poppy Could Be The Main Villain Of Poppy Playtime Chapter 2

Perhaps the strongest possibility for Chapter 2’s main villain – besides Mommy Long Legs – is Poppy herself. Those who have played Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 before Chapter 2 was announced know the unsettling phrase she states at the end, “You opened my case…” The titular doll is the oldest toy that Playtime Co. has ever made. She’s been experimented on along with the rest of the toys, as evidenced by her bloody music box in the Poppy Playtime Maintenance Tape. She narrates the trailer, but is not shown physically. It seems strange that she would not be shown or accompany the player throughout the toy factory after they rescue her, especially since she seems weak and fragile next to the likes of Huggy Wuggy and Mommy Long Legs.

Poppy’s design is yet more evidence that she could be the main villain of Chapter 2. Finding every VHS tape in Poppy Playtime might tell players a good bit about the lore, but most of Poppy’s hasn’t been revealed yet. It is known, however, that she was designed to be an interactive toy, that would be able to dynamically converse with children. With such intelligence, especially compared to the seemingly-brutish Huggy Wuggy, it’s possible that she’s the overarching antagonist of the whole series. She also states in the trailer that the protagonist is “perfect… too perfect to lose,” which seems quite menacing. Her being the oldest toy also means that she’s unlikely to refer to a comparative newcomer like Mommy Long Legs as “Mommy,” which is further evidence in her favor and against Mommy Long Legs. One part intelligent toy locked inside a glass case and forced to watch as others take her place with one part horrific human experimentation certainly seems like a good recipe for Poppy Playtime‘s main villain, of Chapter 2 and beyond.
