Power Rangers: Dino Fury star Tessa Rao reveals she’s excited about being the first female Green Ranger. The Power Rangers franchise has been a staple in the entertainment world since its debut in 1993. Beginning as the children’s show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the series follows the heroic Power Rangers as they fight various enemies. The original show spawned 21 different series with varying themes, consisting of 28 seasons total. There have also been three feature films based on the Power Rangers, with the most recent coming out in 2017. A Power Rangers shared universe is also on the way, with movies and TV shows that will be connected. All told, the Power Rangers franchise shows no signs of slowing down, even nearly 30 years after its debut.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The newest season of the Power Rangers show is called Dino Fury and premiered in February 2021. It follows a new team of heroes powered by dinosaurs who come together to take on aliens. A trailer released in September 2020 revealed the return of the Dinozords, with a cast announcement coming soon after. Power Rangers: Dino Fury features the Red, Pink, Blue, and Black Rangers. However, the Green Ranger, played by Rao, is receiving a lot of attention as its the first time that Ranger has been portrayed as female.

Screen Rant spoke with Rao about her role in Power Rangers: Dino Fury. The actress says she’s “incredibly excited” to be playing the Green Ranger:

Tessa, it’s so cool that we’re getting our first female Green Ranger. Can you talk to me about that experience?

Tessa Rao: Yeah. I’m gonna be honest with you: I didn’t realize when I first got the role that that was the case. When I found out, I was quite shocked and incredibly honored and incredibly excited. I just think representation is so important, across the board, whether that’s gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or whatever it is.

Representing different communities is really important for the viewers to be able to see themselves in different characters. And it’s really exciting to me that I’ve been given the opportunity to hopefully be that representation for maybe some girls out there that quite like the color green or always wanted to be Green and didn’t really feel like they could be, or whatever it was it. It means a lot to me, and I hope I do it justice.

Considering the Power Rangers franchise has existed since the early ’90s, it is a bit surprising there hasn’t been a female Green Ranger yet. Too often, female Power Rangers viewers were expected to like the Pink Ranger best, despite there being no real reason for it. Rao makes a great point about the importance of showing young girls in particular that they can just as easily identify with the Green Ranger instead. It’s clear this important step toward representation in the Power Rangers franchise isn’t lost on the actress.

With more Power Rangers projects on the way, hopefully this push for inclusion continues in the future. Rao’s role as the Green Ranger in Power Rangers: Dino Fury could be the thing to turn the tide. It’s exciting to imagine a future where kids can see themselves in all of the Power Rangers, which will hopefully be the case soon. In the meantime, viewers can continue to enjoy Rao’s performance as the Green Ranger in Power Rangers: Dino Fury.
