The Predator is becoming the prey in a new Marvel Comics series. They may be best known as a blockbuster film franchise, but the Aliens and Predators have a long history in comics as well; Dark Horse gained the license to tie-in comics back in the early ’90s and produced some tremendous comics. But, with Disney acquiring the two R-rated franchises as part of its Fox acquisition, it was only a matter of time before those rights were passed to Marvel, a Disney subsidiary.

That expectation became a reality in July 2020, with Marvel confirming they intended to launch a new range of comics set in the sci-fi universe. Comic books are a visual medium, and since then Marvel has been teasing fans with a stream of variant covers featuring Aliens and Predators alongside Marvel superheroes. Explicit team-ups are unlikely to happen anytime soon, because the dark and violent franchises stand best on their own. But the potential was evident all the same, with Marvel expected to bring their best writers and artists to Alien and Predator comics.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how Marvel handles the Predators. The reality is that these vicious aliens work best as a malicious, malignant force of nature, and are therefore best viewed through human eyes. The concept behind Marvel’s Predator series is an intriguing one because the star is essentially a Predator hunter. That’s a smart way of giving readers all the information they need on a Predator’s ways and weapons because any hunter needs to be intimately familiar with their prey. Of course, it’s safe to assume any attempt to hunt down a Predator will turn into a bloodbath because the mysterious young girl will surely have underestimated her opponent. Notice that Marvel carefully avoids naming their central character, perhaps because she is subtly linked to the main film franchise in some way.

Predator fans have been eagerly awaiting news of Marvel’s plans for their favorite extraterrestrial hunters. The hope will be that Marvel’s Predator comics become as culturally significant as their Star Wars books and that 20th Century Studios considers incorporating these stories into their big-screen plans to create a shared transmedia universe. The next chapter of the Predator saga is about to begin.
