The teens on Pretty Little Liars have been put through the wringer, and Hanna Marin just might take the cake when it comes to pain and suffering. The popular character has had her heart broken, cheated death, all the while looking poised, stylish, and glamorous.

With crazy season finales and surprises on every street corner in Rosewood, this teen drama has some super loyal fans. When looking at Hanna’s character development, it’s clear that she has made a lot of strides over seven seasons, but she has also remained true to herself in several key aspects.

10 Changed: She Wasn’t Sure She Would End Up With Caleb After All

Most teen dramas have a rebel and Caleb Rivers is the mysterious Rosewood resident who is Hanna’s main love interest.

But while Hanna and Caleb had a magical love story and they were both wise old souls, Hanna stopped believing that they were truly meant to be. Near the end of the series, she wasn’t sure that they would end up together after all, and they went their separate ways for a little while. This was a big change as early on, she would have sworn they would have never broken up at all.

9 The Same: She Always Got Along Better With Her Mom Than Her Dad

Ashley Marin got a lot of screen time and for good reason, as she was head and shoulders above many parents on teen dramas.

Hanna stayed the same because she always got along better with her mom than her dad. Since her parents’ divorce, Hanna was never happy or comfortable when around her father, who got a whole new family and left her behind. Throughout all the twists and turns in Rosewood, Hanna knew that her mom loved her.

8 Changed: She Almost Got Married To Someone Outside Of The Group

It was difficult for PLL fans to love Jordan, Hanna’s fiance, since, of course, he wasn’t Caleb.

Hanna changed from season 1 to 7 because she almost got married, and more than that, Jordan was totally outside of her Rosewood crew. He didn’t know the disturbing way that she had grown up and all of the wild things that had happened to her and her friends. It would have been drastic for Hanna to go through with the wedding, as this would have pulled her away from her past even more, but she knew it wasn’t right.

7 The Same: She Was Always Fond Of Mona

Mona Vanderwaalwas a fascinating character, as she could seem evil in one scene and smile genuinely in another.

Hanna was always fond of Mona and that was something that never wavered. Even though Hanna had her moments of wondering who the real, actual Mona was and if she even knew her at all, she always cared about her and wanted her to be okay.

6 Changed: She Always Assumed She Would Leave Rosewood

On the surface, Rosewood seems like a great place to settle down, with big houses and tree-lined streets, and a cute downtown core. But that is all a facade for the darkness that lies beneath.

Rosewood is known as one of TV’s scariest towns and Hanna, like her friends, assumed she would be long gone by the time she graduated. When Hanna left NYC and came back to Rosewood, it was an unexpected move for her. Of course, no one expected to have to deal with these horrors for so long.

5 The Same: She Was Friends With Lucas Even When No One Else Was

Lucas was Hanna’s go-to friend when she needed help and he was happy to be there for her. Hanna and Lucas definitely could have dated, but while he had a crush on her, she felt that things should only be platonic between them. They even started working together near the end of the show as Hanna wanted to start her own fashion line.

Hanna was always friends with Lucas, even when everyone at school thought that he was a nerd, and whether it was the first season or the last, she was kind to him.

4 Changed: She Became More Afraid And Bitter As Time Went On

While no one could fault any of the teens on Pretty Little Liars for being in bad moods at any point, Hanna went through some major personality changes between the first and last season.

Hanna definitely became more afraid and bitter. She turned to alcohol and didn’t lean on her friends the way that she once had. She was able to get out of this dark place in the finale, but it did take her a while since the danger was always there.

3 The Same: She Never Lost Her Spunk Or Courage

While Hanna started off a bit moody, she learned how to be sweet as she got older, and fans noticed a positive change in her personality.

One thing that stayed the same about Hanna was her spunk and her courage. Despite all that she went through, she wanted to go after “A” and she was prepared for battle at all times. While this didn’t make for a happy or healthy high school experience, it was what she had to do.

2 Changed: She Announced That She Was Going To Have A Baby

It’s hard to imagine a bigger change for Hanna than deciding to have a baby. It seemed like something that she and Caleb had always wanted, and they were over the moon that she was expecting in the series finale.

Hanna and her friends reunited for one last group hug in the show’s final moments and it was sweet to see them support her and Caleb on their new journey.

1 The Same: Her Life Was Always On The Line

Some truly terrible things happened in Rosewood and Hanna’s life was always on the line.

She hardly had a moment to pause and breathe, always looking over her shoulder for a murderous stalker. This was super scary for Hanna, as she got run over by a car and it wasn’t that long before she was kidnapped. While no one should have to deal with that level of fear and suffering, Hanna came out stronger, and thankfully, she was happy at the end of the series.
