Pretty Little Liars was full of mystery, as everyone tried to figure out who was A. It had interesting relationships that showed off family dynamics, friendships and romance. And it had incredible fashion since every character had a distinct style. Furthermore, there were some notable events over the years, which called for gowns and costumes, and that is what this list is all about.

Down below, there is a ranking of the top 10 formal dresses that were seen in PLL. Some were worn to school dances like proms. Some were wedding gowns. And some were worn to funerals, since there were a few of those on this show!

10 Aria’s Edgy LBD

During Season 1, the girls got all dressed up for homecoming, and while they all looked fabulous, Aria’s dress really stood out the most. It was very her, as it was flirty yet edgy, a perfect blend of her personality. As seen here, it was black, with a full skirt, a high neck and chains on the sleeves.

9 Hanna’s Juliet-Inspired Dress

Season 2 brought about a masquerade, where the Liars paired their formal wear with masks.

Again, each ensemble was special in its own way, but Hanna takes the award for best dressed on that night. She was inspired by Romeo and Juliet, meaning her and Caleb shared some sweet moments. The dress had a corset, was topped with a flower crown and featured long, white, flowing fabric.

8 Spencer’s Elegant Halloween Costume

The Halloween train episode from the third season was an epic one, and it put these characters on display in fun costumes: Hanna was Marilyn Monroe, Aria was Daisy Buchanan, Emily was Barbarella, and Spencer was Marie “Slim” Browning, a Lauren Bacall character from the film To Have and Have Not.

Toby dressed up as Humphrey Bogart’s character in that film, and together, they looked like they stepped right out of the ‘40s! The cut of Spenc’s dress, the gloves, the way her hair was styled… It was all perfection.

7 Emily’s Wedding Dress

These friends were part of a bridal charity fashion show during Season 4, and it was super neat to see them all in wedding gowns. The best one had to be Emily’s though, as it looked like it was made especially for her. The sweetheart neckline and the lace sleeves showed off her body in a beautiful way.

6 Aria’s Ravenswood Costume

Something else that happened during the fourth season was a trip to Ravenswood, which called for Victorian costumes. Costumes always make for good TV, especially if the outfit is as good as Aria’s was in this episode.

It was pink and black, for another feminine yet edgy look. It had a corset and lace sleeves. And it was paired with a top hat and a detailed black necklace.

5 Spencer’s Ice Ball Gown

Next up would be the gown that Spencer wore to the ice ball in Season 5. Those dresses all stand out to fans, as this was another very memorable moment. But hers just went over and beyond.

It had a vintage vibe, with its delicate detailing. It was simple yet stunning, in an icy blue color. And her hair and makeup choices added to the elegance in a wonderful way.

4 Spencer’s Plaid Prom Dress

Spencer had another great look during that season, and it came during the makeshift prom at The Dollhouse. While the edgy looks were usually seen on Aria, this plaid dress was an awesome choice, as Spencer did have a preppy style and was seen in plaid schoolgirl skirts more than once!

The way the fabric was placed, the color palette and the black accessories (like a choker and gloves) made this a stand-out ensemble.

3 All Their Fairy Tale Prom Dresses

Some of the most beloved formal looks came in Season 6, when the girls had another unique prom; they couldn’t go to their school’s (though they ended up there anyway), so their moms held a little get together for them in the Hastings’ backyard barn.

The fairy tale theme led to dresses that were so fitting for these characters: Spencer looked elegant in green velvet, Emily looked tough in black spikes, Hanna looked stylish in white/gold lace, and Aria looked funky in a Snow White-inspired crop top and headband!

2 All Their Outfits At Charlotte’s Funeral

That same season, they all showed off their best funeral looks, as well. Due to the nature of this TV show, there were quite a few funerals, and the ones worn to Charlotte’s were gorgeous. Emily’s had a sporty vibe to it, Hanna’s looked as if it came straight from the pages of a magazine, Aria’s was original, and Spencer’s was sophisticated.

1 Aria’s Actual Ceremony Dress

As the series wrapped up, some actual weddings took place, and a few more formal options were showcased. Perhaps the best of these was the dress Aria wore when she finally tied the knot with Ezra. Yes, during the actual church ceremony, she wore a short and lacy little number that felt very retro, with its bell sleeves. It was appropriate for the occasion and so very her.
