This week Amazon’s Prime Video will be adding the complete season 1 of a comedy TV series and an LGBTQ+ biographical drama, as well as continuing with their weekly TV show releases and updating their back catalog. Over the last two years, the release model around theatrical releases has been a little shaky at best. As a result, movies have been tending to move to streaming faster, if not being released their first, as recently happened for the extremely successful Turning Red on Disney+. This has meant that streaming services like Amazon’s Prime Video have been able to increase their output of newer movies and enable more viewers to enjoy this content from the comfort of their own homes, alongside a bastion of new TV shows and older movies.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Last week, Amazon’s big Prime Video release was Spencer, a fictionalized account of Princess Diana’s 1991 Christmas based on her struggles under the expectations surrounding her loveless marriage to Prince Charles. Kristen Stewart starred as Princess Diana herself in Spencer and her performance has been lauded for its quality. Amazon also released Arsène Wenger: Invincible one Prime Video, a documentary about the legendary and longest-serving manager of the Arsenal football team and how he guided them through their “invincible” season in 2003-2004. Finally, Prime Video debuted the full first season of the reality show Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls in which Lizzo runs a competition to find a cadre of backup dancers that share Lizzo’s own body type.

All of the different streaming services have their own approaches to release schedules. While many use a form of weekly model that sees all of their new releases drop on one specific day of the week, with Prime Video Amazon uses a monthly release schedule. Because of Prime Video’s monthly release schedule, the content drops can be spread out across different days of the week and month, although there is usually a weighting towards the first day of each month. Prime Video’s content releases fall into three main categories: new movies and TV shows that are releasing on Amazon’s Prime Video before anywhere else (often these are Amazon Originals), movies that have seen a theatrical release, and TV shows that have appeared on broadcast television but are now receiving their first appearance on streaming, and older content that is coming to Amazon’s Prime Video for the first time as part of their expansive back catalog. Here are the best new movies and TV shows coming to Amazon Prime Video during the week of March 28.

Hacks (Season 1) – April 1

The award-winning comedy series Hacks will arrive on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming platform on April 1. Hacks season 1 was originally released in the United States on HBO Max, but will now see a wider release with all episodes from Hacks season 1 being released on Prime Video on the same day. Hacks follows Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) as a legendary stand-up comic and a diva who finds that she is losing relevance and is having her regular performance dates trimmed down. Meanwhile, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) is searching for a new job with difficulty after being fired as a comedy writer because of insensitivity. The two end up teaming up in a mismatched pairing as they try to provide Deborah with fresh material. Hacks season 2 was confirmed in June 2021 and is expected to release in May 2022.

Joe Bell – April 1

Based on a true story, Joe Bell stars Mark Wahlberg, Reid Miller, and Connie Britton. After his son, Jadin Bell (Miller) is bullied relentlessly because of his sexuality, Joe Bell (Wahlberg) sets out on a plan to walk across America giving anti-bullying speeches at schools along the way. Joe Bell’s emotionally complex narrative is split across events in 2013 during Joe’s walk and flashbacks to the events that led up to Joe setting out on his journey.

Movies New To Amazon Prime Video

As well as adding brand new content and Amazon Originals, Prime Video also regularly bolsters its collection of older movies throughout the month and these are available to Amazon Prime subscribers at no extra cost. This week, Prime Video will add two action movies. The first comes on April 1 as Amazon adds Will Smith’s 2004 science fiction action film I, Robot to Prime Video. The movie sees Will Smith as Detective Spooner as he investigates the death of Dr. Alfred Lanning, the co-founder of U.S. Robotics in a world where robots are common and governed by Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. Following I, Robot, on April 2, Amazon Prime Video will receive the 1994 action classic Speed, starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, and Dennis Hopper. Speed follows LAPD SWAT officer Jack Traven (Reeves) as he attempts to thwart a bomber who has attached a bomb to a bus that will detonate if the bus drops below 50 miles per hour.

Amazon’s Weekly TV Show Releases On Prime Video
