Russian luxury brand Caviar has unveiled a limited edition, solid gold PlayStation 5. No official price is listed, but it is undoubtedly ridiculously expensive.

The news comes just days after Dbrand announced its own custom PS5 faceplates, daring the company to sue. Previous attempts at selling custom PS5 faceplates were shut down by PlayStation following legal threats, as the company claims its intellectual property includes the removable plates. Clearly, Dbrand is not afraid of any threats, and now it appears that Caviar is joining in with its own questionable, custom faceplates.

Earlier today, LetsGoDigital reported on a posting by Caviar for the one-of-a-kind, custom console, and did some speculating on how much it will cost. The website writes, “The Caviar PS5 Limited Edition is completely clad in 18-karat gold in the company’s jewelery workshop. The DualSense controller has also been given a matching theme.” As for the design, LetsGoDigital adds,

Caviar has opted for a 3D design which gives the console an extra voluminous look with a beautiful texture. The console is composed of 8 plates, cast in solid 18-karat gold. To manufacture this unique and luxurious design, no less than 30 kilograms of gold are used, of which 20 kilograms are actually present on the console.

For those not well versed in metric, 20 kilograms is a little over 44 pounds. For reference, the standard PlayStation 5 weighs just under 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms), making Caviar’s gold PS5 more than four times as heavy. The Caviar website does not list a price for this interesting console, but LetsGoDigital notes that, “With a gold price of roughly € 50,000 per kilo, the cost price of the game console alone amounts to about € 1,500,000.” A quick Google search has €50,000 valued at $61,051.50 USD, and €1,500,000 at $1,831,545.

Again, Caviar’s website does not have a price listed, the only way to see a price is to select, “request a price,” but doing so signs you up for a 1-click order which is inadvisable to say the least, especially if the console costs almost $2 million USD. Since its release last month, the default, non-golden PlayStation 5 has been hard to find and people have been getting antsy trying to find one, resorting to tracking down Target’s shipping schedule, among other things.

Caviar’s golden PlayStation 5 is definitely not for everyone, but its existence poises a few questions. Of course the biggest are, “will Sony allow this console to be sold,” and, “who even wants it?” Then there are other questions like, “why is a solid gold PlayStation 5 being sold during a pandemic for $1.8 million,” when some people can not afford or even find a regular console. Caviar specializes in luxury items so it is not like a gold PlayStation 5 is meant for the average consumer, but its existence still raises many questions (and that is not even getting into the gaudy design choices).
