Following a recent restock in the UK, PS5 and Xbox Series X remained available to order for an unprecedented 24-hour period, news that could bode well for new-gen console availability in 2022. Both high-end devices have proven difficult to find since their respective launches in late 2020. While Sony at one point seemed confident in its ability to meet lofty sales expectations for the year, reports suggest even PS5 will miss production targets.

Many parts manufacturers estimate the console stock shortage will persist well into 2022. Others, however, such as Intel, predict the supply constraints may not end until sometime in 2023. The latest-gen hardware continues to sell appreciably, though. PlayStation 5, for example, had topped 13.8 million units sold worldwide as of this past October. As usual, Microsoft remains mum about Xbox sales figures, but analysts put the Series X|S at around six million units. Both consoles experienced healthy first years, then; year two could prove even healthier in some respects, based on stock information out of the United Kingdom.

PS5 and Xbox Series X typically sell out in a matter of minutes after new stock goes live online. Yet that was not the case when Game and Amazon UK opened up orders on Thursday morning for PS5 and Series X, respectively, however. According to VGC, both storefronts still had the consoles available for purchase 24 hours after orders opened up. Needless to say, this marks an unprecedented amount of time for both to remain in stock, though the publication notes that some orders won’t be fulfilled until next month. This seems to indicate the tide is turning, at least in some regions; thus, maybe those still looking for a current-gen console will have better luck in 2022.

Of course, such a phenomenon with the aforementioned UK storefronts could be attributed to both receiving higher than normal stock for the holiday season. Many may recall that Sony filled three 747 jets with PS5 consoles in late October, then shipped them to the UK in an attempt to meet Christmas demand. These preemptive measures very likely had some bearing on Game’s ability to sell the device for several hours longer than usual.

Notably, 2022 should prove a big year for Microsoft and Sony-published software, too. Microsoft has the likes of Arkane’s Redfall and Bethesda Game Studio’s Starfield on the docket for Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, PlayStation-owned studios Guerrilla Games and Santa Monica Studio plan on shipping Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarök, respectively. The new year can’t get here fast enough.
