The whole premise of Psych was that one of its two main protagonists, Shawn Spencer (James Roday), pretended to be a psychic – here’s why. In the USA series, Shawn and his best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) ran a psychic detective agency based in Santa Barbara, CA, and most of their cases were for the local police department, who had the two working for them as consultants.

Shawn was able to help the police by being able to detect hard-to-spot details others would have overlooked. His heightened awareness of his surroundings became a great crime-solving skill for the SBPD, and Shawn used this “gift” to put together clues and find the perpetrator behind each crime without the people around him noticing he wasn’t really psychic. He was able to hide his gift by faking psychic “visions” that would lead him to the murderer. Shawn would also pretend to communicate with spirits, animals, and even inanimate objects. These things were all part of Shawn’s process in finding the killer, as he enjoyed building suspense and putting on a show.

If Shawn is simply using his own natural talents to solve crimes, why does he have to hide behind the facade of a psychic? After all, Shawn really is just doing his own brand of detective work, and the number of cases he’s solved (with Gus’ help) is an indication of how effective his unorthodox methods are. Despite these facts, Shawn felt like he had no choice to lie, and the reason for that goes all the way back to Psych‘s pilot episode, when it was explained that Shawn would face consequences if he was revealed to be a fraud.

In the Psych pilot episode, Shawn spotted a detail during a news broadcast and called in a tip that was so accurate he suddenly became the prime suspect in a crime. Unable to explain how he, a person with no experience as a real detective, could have acquired his information, he came up with the psychic lie. By pretending to be a psychic, he didn’t have to have real reasons for knowing these things. Once he solved the case, he found that he had to keep the lie going because Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) said he would be prosecuted for hindering a criminal investigation if she ever discovered she was being scammed.

Through most of the series, Gus and Henry (Corbin Bersen) were the only main characters who knew the truth about Shawn, but in season 7, Juliet (Maggie Lawson) figured it out as well, forcing Shawn to explain that he had to lie to protect himself. Shawn continued to keep this secret up until the Psych series finale. Shawn’s “visions” and “psychic episodes” were on display in nearly every episode – particularly at the end of each one, when it was time to expose the murderer’s plan. For eight seasons, Shawn’s guise as a psychic was a vital aspect of the series, as it contributed a great deal to the show’s humor.
