Update (8/6/2021 2:45 PM EDT): Developer Double Fine has announced on Twitter that Psychonauts 2 has officially gone gold ahead of the game’s August 25 release date. This means that the version of Psychonauts 2 that will be sent to physical and digital retailers is complete, and it’s a development milestone that Double Fine says has “been a long time coming.” The original story continues below.

New details on Double Fine’s upcoming title Psychonauts 2 have revealed that the game will perform substantially better on Xbox Series X/S than on PlayStation 5. First announced at the game awards in 2015, the highly anticipated sequel to Psychonauts is slated for release on August 25.

A sequel to the critically acclaimed 2005 third-person platformer of the same name, Psychonauts 2 continues the story of Raz, a runaway from the circus who undergoes training at a secret summer camp to become a Psychonaut – a spy with psychic abilities. Aiming to improve on its predecessor, Psychonauts 2 will feature new abilities, with Raz now a fully-fledged Psychonaut, and allow players to continue playing after finishing the game’s main story.

According to Well Played, details on Psychonauts 2’s performance on consoles have emerged, revealing that the game will run better on Xbox Series X/S than on PlayStation 5. This is because the game will not be receiving a native PS5 version of the game, but will instead run the PS4 version via backwards compatibility. On the Xbox Series X/S, Psychonauts 2 will receive HDR and VRR support, a feature that will be completely absent on PlayStation versions of the game. On PS5, the game will run at 1440p/60fps and 1080p/30fps on the PS4. In comparison, the resolution for the Xbox Series S will be an impressive 1620p/60fps, far better than the PlayStation 5, and also support 120fps while running at 1080p. The Xbox Series X version will perform with a base resolution of 4K at 60fps, and offer 120fps at 1440p.

For those on PC, the game’s framerate and resolution are uncapped, and therefore will run according to the player’s hardware capabilities. While VRR support is offered, PC players will not receive HDR support. The glaring difference in performance between the two consoles could be due to the fact that Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft in 2019, with Psychonauts 2 being the studio’s first title released under Xbox Game Studios.

Unsurprisingly, Double Fine has focused its efforts on ensuring the game performs the best on Xbox consoles, given that Psychonauts 2 was crowdfunded before Microsoft stepped in to provide additional support. While this news may come as a disappointment to PlayStation players, it is encouraging that the studio was able to release Psychonauts 2 on the console as initially promised.

Psychonauts 2 releases on August 25th, 2021, on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 via Backwards Compatibility, and PC.
